EHS Specialist

Primary purpose:

  • The EHS Specialist entails the ability to problem solve and resolve EHS issues at the Chicago Liquid site as needed. The EHS Specialist will be responsible to assist in the implementation and development of multiple health, safety, and environmental tasks including, but not limited to , employee and contractor safety, safety training, safety permitting, incident investigation, emergency response and industrial hygiene monitoring.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist the EHS Manager with development and implementation of all site, corporate, and regulatory EHS requirements.
  • Independently act as site safety permitter
  • Promote EHS awareness by building on existing culture and program strengths, contributing communication with all level employees, ad promoting positive reinforcement of safety and health rules and regulations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on site, corporate, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct formal and informal site audits, job audits, and routine walk arounds as needed or as directed.
  • Assist site personnel with implementation and interpretation of site EHS regulations.
  • Inform site management of violations of EHS procedures and document findings, corrective actions, and tracking of closure of items identified.
  • Support Terminal Site Safety Committee.
  • Provide site specific safety orientation, personnel training, and manage database to track current training within designated terminals.
  • Directly responsible to ensure location is audit ready at all times.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as required and requested.

Position Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety or other related field or five years’ experience in EHS field.

Experience / specific knowledge:

  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of bulk material storage and transportation, including rail and water movements of bulk material products.

Certifications, licenses, registrations:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

Competencies, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to deal effectively with people and resolve conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to identify possible root causes of problems and develop and implement corrective actions for resolution of problems.
  • Ability to make decisions and/or take action based on logical assumptions derived from factual information gathered.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Possess ability to pass and complete safety training/certification as required by customers to work in their facilities, and as required by Kinder Morgan.
  • Ability to accept supervision/direction and work effectively and cooperatively with other people.
  • Ability to focus attention and follow work rules.
  • Successful completion of background check and post-offer and random drug screens.
  • Ability to speak and understand English
  • Ability to work with others, and take direction from supervisor(s), focused attention on details, and follow work rules.

Physical demands:

  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces, and frequently lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds. Employee must be able to work at heights up to 80 feet.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must meet medical criteria for use of respiratory protective equipment.

Working conditions:

  • Must be willing to work all shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed and required.
  • Perform work in dusty environment and all types of temperature/weather conditions.
  • Respond to call out as needed.

Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills, and abilities:

  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience in emergency response
