Chief Safety Officer

The Engineering Department requires a self-motivated, eager person who will apply and monitor the application of Safety control systems and procedures according to organisational and legislative requirements.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

  • National Diploma in Safety Management or similar related qualification.
  • 10 years working experience within the Safety discipline of which 5 years at least should be at an equal level to a Senior Safety Officer
  • Valid Code 8 Drivers’ License
  • Must have completed SAMTRAC or equivalent safety course
  • Mining experience (underground and/ or surface mining) as a Safety Officer, Shift boss or Engineering Foreman is a strong added advantage
  • Blasting ticket or Competent A would be advantageous

Key Performance Areas / Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the implementation of the risk management system, that includes new projects and advise and ensure compliance with Safety Risk Management Programme factors and legislation.
  •  The system must ensure that risk mediators are implemented that comply with applicable insurance standards and current legislation.
  • Develop and manage the assurance function (audits/ inspections) on Safety Management systems to ensure achievement of objectives, by establishing and implementing approved medium and long term plans, aligned to the company’s strategic business goals.
  • Conduct required audits and inspections and coordinate external audits to enhance best practice.
  • Ensure the investigation of all serious and critical incidents and oversee associated follow up action strategies and implement medium and long term plans to prevent similar occurrences.
  • Ensure adequate knowledge of Safety standards and statutory applicable regulations, by giving effective advice and recommendations to line managers and employees.
  • Oversee and ensure the integrity of the accident/ incident investigation database. 
  • Timely logging, conducting and close-out of incident investigations.
  • Assist and where relevant lead the development of OHSAS18001 procedures and associated documentation.
  • Assist through accident/incident reporting systems to evaluate the effectiveness of the Safety Management Risk Programme, including training and awareness, identification of opportunities and threats and assist in the formulation of plans to enhance compliance and the achievement of a safety resilient culture.
  • Revise Safety standards and required documentation on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance to current policies, procedures, codes of good practice and legislations.
  • Provide specialist technical knowledge and guidance to all levels of management and resolves a wide range of Safety management system challenges and related interfacing issues, requiring solutions for new projects, unusual conditions and corrective measures.
  • Responsible for the coordination and conducting of internal Safety audits.
  • Defining project needs statements and translate into appropriate requirements statements to support effective scope management in line with best practice principles.
  • Manage and control the allocation of funds to ensure adherence to approved budgeted expenditure.
  • Ensures adherence to the company's environmental management programme and objectives are implemented according to statutory legislation and the Strategic and Risk Management Plans.
  • Assist in managing and monitoring operational adherence to Safety and Product Protection programme goals and objectives and ensure adherence to Zero Harm principles
