Junior Estimator

Job Description           

  • A global full-service engineering and construction management company, [Company], is seeking a Junior Estimator to perform well-defined estimating tasks involving conceptual, design development, and unit cost, firm fixed price construction estimating. The successful candidate will establish relationships within the department and division to increase their exposure to various types of projects and estimating exercises. They will possess an Engineering, Estimating, Procurement, or Construction Project Management background. They will learn efficient and accurate estimating practices leading to them performing quantity surveys that are later inputted into the estimating program / software.

Accountabilities and Requirements

  • Your will report to a senior (or mid level) level estimator, and follow their direction regarding assignments.
  • Provide accurate construction takeoff and cost estimates based on; RFP, SOW, narratives / design description, construction documents, location factors, and appropriate labor compensation, etc.
  • Responsible for accurately generating “detail” quantities and estimates with estimating tools provided by [Company].
  • Must be able to accurately complete assignments in a timely manner, with sufficient time for reviews.
  • Expected to become proficient with working multiple projects simultaneously.
  • May be asked to develop scope of work definitions for sub-contractors based on contractual documents.
  • May be asked to work weekends and / or additional hours to complete assignments.
  • Must be able (and willing) to work independently as well as in a team environment in an office setting with supervision.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must be detail and accuracy oriented regarding takeoff and estimate entry.
  • Must have a friendly, approachable, professional, team attitude.
  • Some travel will be expected for up to two weeks from time to time (possible travel by airplane).

Knowledge / Experience

  • BS/BA in Construction Management, engineering or equivalent construction field experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Proficient with computer usage (Microsoft products), and expected to learn estimating applications / software’s (Timberline and On Screen Takeoff) quickly, as well as being proficient with MS Word and Excel.
  • 1+ years of experience as a junior estimator, estimating all aspects of construction are an advantage / plus.
  • Field experience with / on construction projects an advantage / plus.
  • Experience in estimating all types of commercial vertical construction (including underground infrastructure) are an advantage / plus.
  • Experienced with Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) as related to estimate structure, project cost, and schedule control is an advantage / plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with mechanical, plumbing, electrical and fire protection is an advantage / plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Interacts with other estimating team members as necessary to assemble accurate quantity surveys for final review and use by the mid level or senior estimator.
  • With guidance and direction learning to coordinate and execute the total estimating process.
  • With guidance and direction develop concise, well organized quantity surveys / take off and estimates.
  • Develop effective communications both orally and written involving various estimating tasks, issues, clarifications and exceptions, and correspondence.
  • Learn to review, evaluate and apply to the estimate - the contractual documents and guidelines such as the RFP, SOW and bid forms.
  • Learns to effectively utilize AMEC estimating applications and software’s such as On Screen Take Off and Timberline.
  • Learn to develop material list to be distributed to vendors.
