Job description:
Purpose Of Position
Responsible for the continuous availability of electronic systems and components that are integral to Brigus Gold mining activities. Duties include, but are not limited to, construction, installation, alteration, testing, troubleshooting and repair all electric or electronic systems, components and cables from 110 volts up to 13,200 volts.
Specific Accountabilities/Deliverables
The list of duties and responsibilities below are not exclusive or exhaustive, and the employee will be required to undertake such duties as may reasonably be expected within the scope of grading of the position. All employees are required to be professional, cooperative and flexible in line with the requirements of the position.
- Read and interpret drawings, circuit diagrams, blueprints and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layouts for new or existing installations in order to figure out how to set up new electrical installations/systems or how to fix existing ones.
- Laying down wires; splicing and connecting wires; installing switches, circuit breakers and lighting fixture; and testing to make sure everything is working.
- Install brackets and hangers to support electrical equipment.
- Install, replace and repair lighting fixtures and electrical control and distribution equipment, such as switches, relays and circuit breaker panels.
- Splice, join and connect wires to fixtures and components to form circuits. Connect electrical power to equipment, devices and heating and cooling systems.
- Test continuity of circuits using test equipment to ensure compatibility and safety of system, following installation, replacement or repair.
- Analyze electrical systems and equipment to figure out why they aren’t working, exactly where the problems are and how to fix them.
- Conduct preventive maintenance programs on electrical equipment and keep maintenance records.
- Repair and maintain all electrical equipment and process control.
- Maintain lighting, switches and electrical equipment in safe working order.
- Install wiring circuits for extensions and additions to work sites.
- Carry out electrical fitting, high voltage switching and electronics.
- Maintain communications and telecommunications systems.
- Responsible for establishing and ensuring ongoing supply or power from generators to plant and accommodation units.
- Ensure safe work practices near electrical outlets.
Working Conditions
- Underground and surface mining environments- may have to work in dusty, hot and noisy conditions (control measures are in place with dust control and ventilation).
Selection Criteria
- 1st Class Industrial Electrician Designation and Certification.
- Valid Ontario inter-provincial electrical trade qualification.
- Familiarity with reading electrical schematics and prints is necessary
- 2-3 years of experience, preferably in underground mining or a similar environment is required.
- Self-starter with a solid technical background and proven troubleshooting skills.
Required Competencies
- Minimum 3 years of mining, industrial or heavy commercial maintenance electrical experience.
- Demonstrate proper use and care of tools, a working knowledge of rigging and overhead crane operation,
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical equipment using electrical schematics.
- Ability to splice and terminate 600 volts class cables.
- Ability to properly use Megger (R) type insulation testers on cables, motors, transformers and other electrical equipment.
- Ability to size motor leads, starters and mother protective devices for installation.
- Ability to size cables and protective devices for 480 volts distribution systems.
- Knowledge of general lockout, high voltage switching, lockout and grounding procedures.
- Ability to properly use a multi-meter.
- Good safety knowledge and understanding with the ability to recognize hazards and situations that may cause problems.
- Multi-skilled in areas such as motors, instrumentation and control including computer controls.
