These endeavors have been around for centuries and will continue to be a vital part of the global economy. We currently have an opening for a Safety Specialist at our Helm, CA location.

Position Summary:

  • The Safety Specialist has a critical role in helping to create and sustain an occupational injury and illness free workplace. The position requires visible and positive leadership in all areas of safety and health. This Specialist is responsible to ensure that regulatory, Company and site specific safety and health programs, procedures and guidelines are implemented and updated to maintain accuracy. This individual ensures that effective safety and health training is developed or procured, scheduled, conducted and completion status tracked as required by regulation and Company standards. The Safety Specialist interfaces with agencies, Company personnel and contractors performing safety and health audits, tracks completion of action items and ensures they are adequately documented.
Responsibilities:
  • Develops, implements and evaluates safety programs to ensure they are in compliance with regulatory and Company requirements. Utilizes job safety analysis to develop task procedures.
  • Monitors site safety and health conditions and behaviors and coordinates with supervisors to correct deficiencies as needed; tracks incidents and corrective actions.
  • Regularly performs and administers safety audits, inspections, and observations throughout the facility to ensure compliance with OSHA/CalOSHA regulations, company policies and site specific procedures. Maintains OSHA injury and illness log.
  • Identifies areas where improvement is needed and makes recommendations to achieve it.
  • Performs and/or coordinates required industrial hygiene (IH) monitoring; maintains IH monitoring program, schedule, and results.
  • Responsible for purchasing, maintaining, and calibrating sampling equipment to include, but not limited to radiation, air, and noise monitors; coordinates with external laboratory services.
  • Researches, designs, facilitates, and tracks required trainings to include, but not limited to annual HAZMAT and rescue team training; ensures that all employees meet safety standards. Maintains safety training spreadsheet and ensures training is scheduled and completed within required timeframes.
  • Researches, reviews, and updates the plant’s safety standards and procedures as appropriate. Determines and communicates appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for each area of the plant.
  • Researches, reviews, and approves contractors based on their safety performance and documented safety programs; ensures contractor compliance with plant rules and procedures.
  • Interfaces with regulatory officials, consultants, and safety professionals across the company to share resources, discuss issues, stay current on standards and laws.
  • Develops and monitors emergency action plans; Coordinates emergency drills.
  • Helps maintain a safe working environment by complying with all rules and regulations, and continuously models desired safety behavior and practices while performing duties. Ensures that personnel observed in the course of performing the job duties are maintaining a safe working environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health, safety or a related discipline required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications to include, but not limited to Excel, Access, Word, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management skills, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills; exhibits confidence in self and others. Inspires and motivates others to perform well; effectively influences the actions and opinions of others.
  • Knowledge of OSHA/CalOSHA, local, state, and federal regulations and compliance. Working knowledge of PSM/RMP programs.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret safety and health-related laws, regulations and policies; ability to develop and implement appropriate operating practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships. Must project a professional image and demeanor.
  • Must be able to balance multiple tasks and work well under pressure.
  • Travel may be required; valid driver’s license.
  • Required to maintain reliable, regular attendance.

Physical Requirements:

  • This job requires the ability to work in excess of eight hours per day, off-duty hours, and weekends to reach operational goals and compliance requirements. Job duties may require the ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, bend, stoop, reach, lift, grip, push, pull, move, and/or carry equipment which may be in excess of 25 pounds. Finger dexterity may be required to operate a computer keyboard and calculator. In order to perform the duties of this job, the incumbent may be required to walk in excess of 300 yards to reach equipment/areas across the facility.
  • Working in this plant operations environment requires the use of safety equipment to include, but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, hard hat, respiratory protective equipment, and uniforms (in designated areas). This individual may be subject to variations in noise levels and temperature changes due to weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, this individual may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Loose fitting clothing and open toe/heel shoes are not permitted.
