Job Description:

  • [Company] is launching a project to replace its core Energy Transaction & Risk Management (ETRM) software infrastructure and seeks an individual to internally manage all of the various external vendors and internal resources to successfully deliver the implementation project on-time and on-budget. The ETRM Program Manager will be a single point of accountability for the overall ETRM implementation.  The Program Manager will manage the entire project and provide oversight to the functional and technical project managers.  The Program Manager will work closely with Executive Sponsors so that business objectives, stakeholder expectations, and requirements are accounted for in defining the project effort. The Program Manager has responsibility for the escalation of both internal and external budget, schedule, and resource issues to the Executive Project Sponsors, and helps facilitate resolution of issues related to goals and objectives of project. In addition, the Program Manager provides project status and progress updates to [Company]  Executive Sponsors.
  • Contributes to the growth, effectiveness, and profitability of the organization by providing senior business & IT project leadership for the ETRM system implementation. This position demands that the candidate comprehend a wide range of technologies, services, and best practice approaches in the face of a rapidly changing technical environment and has a comprehensive understanding of the business uses of an ETRM platform.
  • This is not a revenue generating position, but it does save the company money by ensuring that accurate system development and integration approaches and/or system designs are generated, reviewed, and implemented to ensure the delivery of the ETRM implementation on time, within cost, and with high quality results meeting the needs of the business.

High Level Duties:

  • Runs complex projects/programs from design and development to production.
  • Defines requirements and plan project lifecycle deployment.
  • Defines resources and schedule for project/program implementation.
  • Create strategies for risk mitigation and contingency planning.
  • Plans and schedule project deliverables, goals, milestones.
  • Liaises with the business users to ensure that system functionality needs are attained.
  • Directs and oversees project engineering team and manages conflicts within group.
  • Performs team assessments and evaluations.
  • Efficiently identifies and solves project issues.
  • Demonstrates leadership to define requirements for project risk.
  • Develop Requests for Proposals (RFP) for external services.
  • Designs and maintain technical and project documentation.
  • Strong organizational, presentation, and customer service skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Leads ETRM project end to end for the implementation of enterprise systems and software that integrate both commercial and custom applications.
  • Provides project management oversight of, and mentoring to, the development staff (and external service providers), utilizing best-practice methodologies, principles and tools. Develops project estimates, conducts quality reviews, and develops and adheres to enterprise IT project and systems development processes, standards and guidelines.
  • Plans and conducts IT project-related work efforts that ensure: (a) elimination of duplicative efforts, (b) conformance to the technology architecture guidelines, (c) avoidance of remediation efforts, and (d) achievement of business objectives.
  • As part of carefully managing the quality of project delivery,: (a) ensures that systems and applications deliver optimal performance and retain future flexibility, (b) identifies existing applications where designs could be improved and further optimized, and (c) identifies potential system design problems before they occur and implements solutions as appropriate.
  • Evaluates and develops achievable and realistic project plans for developing and implementing enterprise level systems and software ensuring that a) critical paths are identified, b) implementation risks are identified and communicated, c) risk management approaches are outlined and followed, and d) business objectives are satisfied.
  • Plans and coordinates cross-departmental management needs (especially between the business and IS) to ensure timely adaptation of new systems and software as well as the triage of critical support incidents for newly delivered systems.
  • Leads, motivates, and empowers other staff in the successful performance of their tasks and responsibilities while encouraging innovation, continuous improvement, and timely execution of IT projects

Job Requirements:
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business discipline or Information Systems
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in the energy industry.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience coordinating and/supporting business & IT business processes.
  • PMP (Project Management Professional) Certification or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Project scheduling and budgeting experience.
  • Demonstrated history of successful project completion leveraging best practices, processes, techniques, standards and tools.
  • Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communications, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated mentoring/training abilities as well as a passion for researching/learning technology (past, present, and emerging).
  • Understanding/familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks is highly desired.
  • Experience successfully deploying a major ETRM system for a company of equivalent size and complexity to Calpine ($20+MM project; 2000+ employees; presence in ERCOT, CAISO, PJM; using power, gas, and financials)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of power and gas trading and relevant markets

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience deploying the Allegro 8 suite of products
  • Experience with business process re-engineering
