Senior Specialist: Community Development & Gender

The purpose of the role is to establish sustainable, integrated community development and gender management plans across the region in order to ensure that we achieve our objectives to create a better future for the communities in which we operate.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Masters Degree or equivalent in a sustainability related field such as environment, international development, gender, social sciences or rural economics
  • Fluency in French highly advantageous
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in working on community development and/or gender especially within Africa
  • Demonstrated experience to produce results in community development and/or gender fields
  • Field experience and demonstrated ability in strategic analysis, design, planning, management and evaluation of programmes / projects that apply integrated and participatory, cross-sectoral approaches
  • Demonstrated experience in working effectively with partners and managing consultants
  • Ability to trust and effectively engage with local and national stakeholders and develop strategic partnerships to leverage resources and coordinate activities with internal and external partners including governments, donors and the private sector
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated through project proposal, publications, reports or related materials.

Job Specification

The role holder has the following accountabilities and authorities:

  • Community Affairs to both monitor and support eight AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Business Units operating mining projects in Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Tanzania, DRC, and Namibia
  • Contribute to a coherent and innovative strategy within eighteen months to address community development and gender issues.  
  • This strategy is a part of a greater Millennium Development Goal strategy being rolled out at sites across the African continent.
Key issues within the context of this strategy include: 
  • Managing mine impacts on community including land use and other close co-habitation issues with our operations;  
  • Community and social development opportunities that benefit both the mine and the communities in which we operate;  Innovative models and partnerships, particularly with local government to support community development and gender equity;  
  • Support and championship the role of women and marginalized groups both at mine sites and the communities in which we operate.
  • Analyze key risks and liabilities at each business united related to community development and gender and recommend appropriate action to mitigate these risks
Assist the Vice President:  
  • Community affairs to develop management pans and systems to support and monitor community development and gender at business units.
  • Provide technical specialist advice to all countries and mine sites to develop and roll-out country and site specific community development and gender plans, in line with company values, standards and guidelines, aiming at reducing risks and conflict.
  • Engage in capacity building activities at the business units to increase their capacity to promote community development and gender equity
Support the Vice President:  
  • Sustainability in securing strategic regional partnerships with key NGO's and other private and public sector actors to support community development and gender equity
  • Monitor and evaluate progress of business units to achieve their community development and gender equity goals in line with the AGA standards and international best practice.
  • Produce timely reports as required within the AGA system.
