Maintenance Mechanic

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • The Maintenance Mechanic (“mechanic”) shall perform work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep mechanical equipment and structures in repair.

At a minimum, duties include:

  • Constructing, installing, servicing, and repairing mechanical real property equipment
  • (e.g., automatic and manual vehicle/cargo doors, gates, and dock levelers);
  • Repairing and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and other items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness;
  • performing the full range of painting, including surface preparation, blending and matching paints, and coating of various surfaces requiring fine finishes and decorative effects;
  • Performing minor roofing repairs;
  • Repairing or replacing defective equipment parts using hand and/or power tools;
  • Following a checklist to perform routine preventive maintenance tasks to ensure equipment operates efficiently and the physical condition of equipment does not deteriorate;
  • Inspecting equipment drives, motors, and belts;
  • Cleaning and lubricating shafts, bearings, and gears;
  • Checking fluid levels;
  • Replacing filters; Inspecting, operating, and testing building systems in order to diagnose malfunctions and to determine corrective actions;
  • Checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs to diagnose malfunctions and to determine corrective actions;
  • dismantling devices to gain access to and to remove defective parts; utilizing standard safety practices/procedures and following established safety rules, regulations, and job hazard analyses; being vigilant in trying to identify real and potential maintenance problems and reporting said observations; maintaining a safe and clean work environment; and reporting status of work orders and labor information to the timekeeper.
  • In addition, at the direction of the Technical Supervisor, the mechanic shall assist other craftsmen in the performance of their duties when either the maintenance mechanic workload is not sufficient to keep the mechanic fully productive or if client-directed, high priority work requires additional manpower on a non-maintenance mechanic task that the mechanic can safely perform. The mechanic shall be required to inform the Technical Supervisor of any identified safety issues as well as any system that is not operational at the end of the duty day. From time to time the mechanic shall be required to respond to emergency system failures after normal duty hours, including weekends.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • The mechanic shall be a high school graduate or equivalent, have a minimum of 2 years related experience, and possess a working knowledge of the safety principles related to work area.

The mechanic shall also possess a working knowledge of:

  • materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of building systems; carpentry methods/techniques and precision carpentry equipment; and advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out more complex and exact projects.

The mechanic shall be skilled at:

  • using, setting-up, operating, and maintaining a variety of painting, roofing, and woodworking power and hand tools/equipment; constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood structures; producing finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance; and tinting, toning, matching, and blending coating materials.

Physical Demands
A qualified candidate shall be able to:

  • see details at close range; move hand, hand together with arm, or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects; keep hand and arm steady while moving arm or while holding arm and hand in one position; make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands while sitting, standing, or lying down to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects; and correctly lift 30 pounds repeatedly for long periods of time.
