Operator Technician III

Essential job duties and responsibilities:

  • Operates the plant in a safe, efficient manner in accordance with Calpine Corporate and Plant Policy and Procedure.
  • Directs crew members during routine operation, plant start-up and shutdown.
  • Coordinates and monitors all plant activities and events in accordance with Calpine Corporate and Plant policy and procedures.
  • Responsible to support crew development, including operator qualification training and check-off.  Monitors crew performance and contributes input on operator level of qualification, to management.
  • Must learn and know to a defined level of qualification the operation of all plant systems and processes.
  • Thorough understanding of plant automatic control systems and control schemes capable of taking manual control to protect plant personnel or equipment.
  • Remotely operates all plant systems and equipment in accordance with Plant Standard Operating Procedures and industry best practices.
  • Develops Plant Standard Operating Procedures that achieves the optimum operation of all plant systems and equipment.
  • Creates and administers work authorizations, safe work permits and energy control isolation instructions.
  • Monitors and analyzes system operating data to ensure economical and reliable operation of all plant processes and equipment.
  • Identifies abnormal equipment conditions and requests repairs to maintain plant availability and reliability.
  • Prepares daily operating reports, outage requests, forced outage reports and other documents as required to inform plant management.
  • Ensures plant is operated in compliance with all state and federal regulation.
  • Maintains plant Logbook creating entries that accurately record and document plant activities and events.
  • Develops operational plans and scheduling for plant activities including major maintenance outages.
  • Monitors chemical supplies and orders as necessary to maintain plant operation
  • Assists in the administration of operator work schedules for assigned personnel.
  • Aware of plant O&M budget constraints for accounts within area of responsibility and assists in managing as required.
  • Performs other duties and administrative tasks as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • A high school graduate.
  • Two years of technical training, plus a minimum of 5 years of power plant operations and maintenance experience, preferably combined cycle gas turbine background.
  • Must be able to respond calmly and think clearly in emergency situations.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to develop plans for the coordination of equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to develop electrical switching orders and LOTOT procedures.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to read and respond to computer-generated data, instrumentation, gauges and readouts.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to read and understand control logic diagrams, P&ID’s, electrical one line diagrams and other technical material pertinent to power plant operation.
  • Must understand Distributive Control, PID loop control, and data communication systems.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to understand and respond to high and medium voltage electrical protection schemes.
  • Must be proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications such as Word and Excel.
  • Candidates must have and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
