Senior Tailings Engineer

Multiple Locations: Ontario, Alberta (Canada), Australia, & the UK

Due to ongoing major projects across Canada and overseas multiple opportunities exist for Senior Tailings Engineers with expertise in dam design in the mining industry and/or oil sands tailings operational experience, including dyke construction planning and execution.

Job Description

The Senior Tailings Engineer is responsible for providing tailings oversight for a comprehensive array of mining/oil & gas projects.

• Manage and execute projects from conception to completion; including time and budget management and quality control
• Deliver projects successfully and be accountable for project planning and direction
• Take a leading technical role on major projects including: tailings storage design, dam design, and related mine engineering/operations for projects worldwide
• Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, specifications, bill of quantities, and cost estimates
• Develop and refine tailings strategies that will achieve regulatory compliance
• Work closely with Process, Mining and Geotechnical groups to optimize tailings plans Develop detailed tailings deposition models and costs
• Provide technical input into pilot testing, engineering studies, and data collection in order to support technical decisions
• Develop procedures for containment construction and tailings deposition
• Review tailings information related to the Frontier regulatory Application, and provide support and guidance for tailings-related SIRs responses and for the project hearing
• Provide input to feasibility RFP and contractor selection and provide oversight of tailings design contractors, including any necessary field programs
• Develop budgets, policies, and procedures for all tailings-related work
• Maintain positive client relationships; Effectively develop new business
• Travel to project sites worldwide in Canada, Asia Pacific, and South America
• Minimum 10-15 years experience required with a preference for working on major mining and/or oil sands projects
• Registered (or eligible to register) as a professional engineer
• Advanced computer skills including proficiency in all aspects of tailings modeling and design and MS Office Suite applications
• Considerable mining and/or oil sands tailings operational experience, including dyke and/or dam construction planning and execution would be highly regarded; regulatory exposure also an asset
• Superior communications skills, both oral and written, including experience creating and making highly effective presentations to senior management
• Strong organizational, project management, and execution skills, including financial analysis and an ability to manage a small group of employees and/or contractors
• Demonstrated ability for innovative thinking and flexibility to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced and team-based environment; capable of working effectively at all levels of an organization
