Mechanical Engineer - Minerals & Mining Processing Industry

Position Overview:

  • Responsible for the Mechanical Engineering functions in the Engineering Department.
  • Interface with the Process Department for calculating and sizing of mechanical equipment in the flow sheet and P&ID’s.
  • Uphold and maintain international engineering standards, codes and practices.
  • Under the direction of the GM: Engineering, prepares, review and coordinate mechanical calculations and drawings for plant layouts and designs.
  • Ensure design engineering standards are maintained and adhered to on all projects.
  • Provide technical design guidance to Project staff on all aspects of design.

Key Performance Areas

  • Mechanical Engineering and Design.
  • Structural and civil design input.
  • Design calculations to size mechanical process equipment.
  • International design standards and codes.
  • Interface with key mechanical equipment supplier.
  • Serviceability, safety and operability of designs and Client liaison.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, review, coordinate, check and approve mechanical drawings, and specifications, under the direction of the GM: Engineering.
  • Provide technical input into structural and civil design issues and liaise with Process Department on plant and equipment designs. Carry out detailed designs and calculations once the Process Department have worked on the initial design and sizing of the equipment.
  • Upgrade design systems and processes and ensure their implementation within Mechanical discipline.
  • Ensure all design standards are adhered to and maintained on all projects.
  • Maintain Drawing Office schedules, with input from the DO Manager, the Design Manager and the GM: Engineering.
  • Ensure that the plant design is optimal in terms of maintainability, serviceability, machine operating cost and safe operation.
  • Liaise with clients on engineering design issues, as required.
  • Liaise with site staff on engineering design issues, as required.

Critical Competencies:

Educational Qualifications:

  • BSc. Degree or BTech. in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5 - 8 years’ experience in a similar role and environment (EPCM minerals & mining processing).
  • The experience must be in engineering design (of all structures within the mining/minerals processing environment.
  • Experience in providing design input into projects within EPCM environment.
  • ECSA registered as Professional Engineer

  • Ability to produce technically acceptable work
Job Knowledge:
  • Mechanical, structural & civil design knowledge, Engineering & knowledge of plane & equipment operations
Impact of role on business value chain:
  • Understanding of other areas of work, outside own area of specialisation. 
  • Understanding of how own role and decisions may impact the business.
Financial and commercial knowledge:
  • Experience in managing budgets and understanding key cost control principles. 
  • Experience in managing contractors and sub-contractors. 
  • Knowledge of, and experience in managing, FIDC and NEC contracts
Other experience:
  • Good computer literacy skills in MS Office, Knowledge & experience in working with MS Projects, a distinct advantage. 
  • Experience in 3DAutocad and other design packages. 
  • Experience in dealing with clients and managing client relationships
