Senior Specialist: Private Sector & Micro Finance

The purpose of the role is to establish sustainable, integrated private sector development µ-finance management plans across the Region in order to ensure that we achieve our objectives to create a better future for the communities.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Masters degree or equivalent in a business or sustainability-related field such as environment, international development, social sciences or rural economics
  • Fluency in French highly advantageous
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in working on development and preferably on private sector development within Africa
  • Demonstrated experience in private sector development
  • Field experience and demonstrated ability in strategic analysis, design, planning, management and evaluation of programs / projects that apply integrated and participatory, cross-sectoral approaches
  • Demonstrated experience in working effectively with partners and managing consultants
  • Ability to build trust and effectively engage with local and national stakeholders and develop strategic partnerships to leverage resources and coordinate activities with internal and external partners including governments, donors, and the private sector.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated through project proposals, publications, reports or related materials.

Job Specification

The role holder has the following accountabilities and authorities:

  • Assist the Vice President:  Community Affairs to both monitor and support eight AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Business Units operating mining projects in Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Tanzania, DRC, and Namibia
  • Contribute to a coherent and innovative Africa strategy within eighteen months to address micro to macro private sector development at the above sites.
Key issues in this area include: 
  • Local employment and procurement; the beneficiation of mining infrastructure for the local community; access to finance for local communities; a range of community and economic development projects that will both support the mine site and the communities in which it operates.
  • This role is particularly important as AGA begins to roll-out a concerted Millennium Development Goal strategy to measurably improve the quality of lives in the communities in which it operates
  • Analyze key risks and liabilities at each business united related to private sector development and recommend appropriate action to mitigate these risks
Assist the Vice President: 
  • Community affairs to develop management plans and systems to support and monitor private sector development at business units.
  • Provide technical specialist advice to all countries and mine sites to develop and roll-out country and site specific private sector development strategies, in line with company values, standards and guidelines, aiming at reducing risks and conflict.
  • Engage in capacity building activities at the business units to increase their capacity to promote private sector development.
Support the Vice President: 
  • Sustainability in securing strategic regional partnerships with key NGO's and other private and public sector actors to support private sector development.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress of business units to achieve their private sector development goals in line with AGA standards and international best practice
  • Produce timely reports as required within the AGA system.
