Job Description

  • This individual is responsible for maintaining stationary production S&G and HMA equipment including but not limited to conveyors, crushers, shakers, elevators, drives, and screws.  This includes inspecting the condition of the machinery and documenting items in need of repair or service; diagnosing problems and performing mechanical repair and maintenance; replacing or repairing defective parts using hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, and welding equipment; rebuilding or fabricating parts; reading technical manuals: and may order parts from central services or outside suppliers/vendors.  May drive a pick-up truck or maintenance vehicle in the plant and/or to pick-up parts from local vendors. May also assist in maintenance and repair activities for the asphalt plant. 
  • The individual may also operate loaders to load aggregates for processing, feed the plant(s) and load finished material onto haul trucks and into the HMA plant bins. Performs thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections and accurately completes daily mobile equipment reports.  Performs duties safely, responsibly and proficiently while observing all safety, health and environmental rules and practices.  Follows established traffic patterns avoiding hazards.  Promptly reports any unsafe conditions.  Maintains good housekeeping practices on equipment and in the plant.  Observes the plant and reports any necessary maintenance or adjustments that may be required. Visually checks material being produced for compliance with specifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • High School diploma or its equivalent is required.  Must possess a minimum of three years repair/maintenance experience in a sand and gravel plant.  Previous experience in operating various types of heavy mobile equipment is preferred but not required.  Requires solid knowledge and understanding of proper operation and capabilities of the equipment.  Must be able to recognize various products by sight and to understand proper plant operation. 

Special Skills and Requirements:

  • A valid driver’s license is required.  Must be able to cut, weld and fabricate; lift plant components up to 50 pounds; work at heights of up to 50-feet and move in a variety of body positions; possess the ability to diagnose sources of trouble and use various hand tools, power tools, and machinery such as grinders, presses, cranes, and jacks to complete repairs; possess basic computer skills and have the ability to read technical manuals and understand schematic diagrams;  be punctual and dependable; initiate and take action before being required to do so and use time efficiently; be safety conscious and respond to inquiries promptly and follow through to ensure the situation is taken care of correctly; possess strong hazard recognition skills; have the ability to climb ladders; have knowledge and understanding of OSHA and MSHA rules and regulations; possess hazard recognition skills and perform tasks in a safe and efficient manner.   Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are required.  Must have personal hand tools up to 1 ½” in size.
