Our client is a leader in the Iron Ore Mine Industry in South Africa, situated approximately 7 kilometres west of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape (+/-200km west from Kimberley), requires the services of an:

Resident Engineer

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Engineering;
  • GCC in Mines and Works;
  • MBA will serve as an added advantage;
  • Twelve years experience in engineering and production within a mining environment;
  • Two years management experience in a Mining Environment;
  • Registration as Professional Engineer (ECSA) will serve as an added advantage;
  • Valid code B/EB drivers license.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Must be computer literate in MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Project;
  • Must be computer literate in JDE, Achiever, Isometrix and discipline specific programmes;
  • Working knowledge of National Water Act, BCOEA, Employment Equity Act, Mine Health and Safety Act, OHSA and Companies Act;
  • Knowledge of risk assessment as per work process;
  • Posses coaching skills;
  • Knowledge of disciplinary procedure, budgeting, mini risk assessments;
  • Must possess planning, problem solving, benchmarking, research, communication and organising skills

Key Performance Areas Include, Inter Alia:

  • Ensure that all legislation relevant to the engineering department is implemented and adhered to;
  • Implementation of operational plans that supports strategic initiatives;
  • Provide input into departmental and functional strategies;
  • Contribute to annual departmental budgets for sub-function;
  • Effectively manage sub-functions and its objectives in line with approved budget;
  • Review and authorise payments in line with approved budget;
  • Identify operational, labour and capex requirements within sub-function for efficient delivery of production;
  • Monitor compliance with all statutory requirements, policies and guidelines;
  • Ensure that all systems and methodologies required to manage health and safety risks efficiently;
  • Create and enhance safety awareness towards assuring full and extensive participation in terms of ownership and related programs
  • Initiate and lead departmental change initiatives and ensure the implementation thereof;
  • Authorise and lead the development and implementation of group continuously;
  • Ensure efficient and effective management of interfaces which impacts or could impact on production objectives;
  • Asses potential of SoR/Mentor SoR/oversee the quality of SoR leadership;
  • Monitor and provide feedback reports;
  • Promote teamwork, provide support, manage and evaluate performance by creating and developing individual development plans;
  • Build, manage and maintain healthy and diverse internal & external relations;
  • Provide relevant specialised technical support to applicable stakeholders;
  • Create engineering services structure with staff compliments;
  • Identify key performance areas for the department and create a suitable structure and staff compliment;
  • Plan labour requirements and motivate line management;
  • Evaluate contractor services prior to appointment;
  • Oversee the contracting services rendered to the mine;
  • Ensure that contactors adheres to all the rules and regulations on the mine;
  • Monitor the performance of the contractors in accordance with SLA’s
  • Establish fully equipped workshop facilities;
  • Asses the requirements of the workshop facilities and approve the plans;
  • Ensure all equipment purchased is in line with mine requirements;
  • Act as custodian of engineering and operation process and systems on the mine;
  • Ensure continuous improvement in the department when benchmarked;
  • Co-develop and sign off all engineering and operations processes, policies and procedures;
  • Ensure capital growth by monitoring and planning the capital projects and expenditure;
  • Ensure that the mine is upgraded and expands in line with 3 year business plan;
  • Plan budget and implement all required actions to ensure sustainable, affordable and profitable capital projects and expansion;
  • Plan the assets of the mine and ensure that it is in line with the mines growth strategy;
  • Ensure that the product adheres to the clients requirements and make changes where necessary to address the needs;
  • Do continuous research and development on processes and equipment;
  • Ad hoc, any other reasonable duties as and when requested from time to time.
  • Appointment: Remuneration will be based on a competitive all-inclusive flexible package.
  • Probation Period: 6 months
  • The successful incumbent will be appointed subject to being certified medically fit as per the Mine Health and Safety Act 29/1996 and meeting the requirements of the Company’s Code of Practice - Minimum Standards of Fitness to perform work at a Mine. He/she may also undergo a psychometric assessment.
  • The abovementioned position is D4 on the Patterson grading system.
