Mining Economist

  • This role is responsible to support Principal Mining Economists and the Technical Investment Review Teams in reviewing and auditing business cases and their optimality at reviews. 
  • The incumbent must have the competency and a fair degree of experience to consider the full resource extraction value chain within a relatively short timeframe.
  • A key aspect of the role will be to interact with the project team and EPCM members responsible for developing and maintaining the business cases for projects. 
  • The successful candidate will also need to closely liaise with corporate finance in order to ensure a sound degree of congruency between the technical and financial fraternities.  
  • The emphasis of this role is on conducting and improving the mining economic assessment of projects for presentation to the technical Investment Review team to improve incumbent proficiency within the field.
  • Financial or Mining related degree with Mining Economics experience essential
  • Experience as a Mining Economist in the mining industry
  • Exposure to benchmarking within the mining industry.
  • A good appreciation of the mining value chain, efficiencies and related KPIs.
  • Appreciation for infrastructure, organisational structure related, shaft, regional and other overhead cost allocations for Greenfield and Brownfield projects.
  • Exposure and application of cost volume relationships (Economies of scale).
  • Working experience in activity based costing, Management Accounting and Financial Management.
  • Financial and efficiency analysis of mining operations to facilitate evaluation and benchmarking.
  • Techno economic risk analysis including Monte Carlo simulations
  • Advanced knowledge of the full value chain from the ore body through the extraction, processing , infrastructure and marketing
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Sound interpersonal and presentation experience
  • A second language such as Spanish or Portuguese will be advantageous.
  • Capacity to analyse financial and economic models rapidly.
  • Experience of developing holistic high-level views of a new project in relative short period of time.
  • Very strong analytical skills and an above average understanding of statistics.
  • High level of competence in computer programs; Excel, and other Management and Financial Accounting software.
  • Management Accounting and or Mining Analyst skills.
  • Demonstrable abilities or proficiencies leant from past experiences, i.e. organisational skills, interpersonal skills, analytical skills, technical skills, communication skills, problem solving skills etc
