Design Engineer
Position Summary
- Perform / lead / manage design engineering projects to support product groups, supply chain, new product development, and product enhancements in regards to fans for the Power, Industrial, Nuclear, Mining & Transportation industries. Direct involvement with all line functions in regards to a manufacturing facility will be required.
Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities & Deliverables
- Performs engineering design analysis for sales order projects, supply chain support, and product development / product enhancements.
- Assists in the technical review of customer specifications which contain requirements outside of our standard scope of supply.
- Ensures products which are designed and engineered meet agreed upon specifications.
- Develops schedules for the engineering execution of each project to achieve successful completion on time and within budget.
- Performs engineering analyses via hand calculations, excel spreadsheets, or various internal software programs in regards to strength of materials, statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, vibrations, fluids, fan performance, and sound.
- Performs material selection, industry specification review, and minor failure analysis.
- Composes technical reports and test procedures.
- Reviews drawings and bills of material for new designs, or design changes which deviate from a previously approved design, to ensure appropriate design controls have been applied.
- Requires working directly with Drafters or Designers in regards to engineering acceptance criteria and may involve working directly with consultants in regards to fan design and selection software.
- Provides technical assistance to product groups, shared services, and the supply chain in regards to components correctly satisfying the design requirements.
- Partners with all central functions such as Quality, Engineering, Finance, IT, and HR to ensure that enabling strategies and tactics are in place and are consistent with broader business strategies and tactics.
- Contributes to the pre and post-metric KPI’s and skills to ensure the successful use of the MS AX solution in APD.
- Establishes and drives process improvements to ensure common KPI’s, documented process and change controls, and skill knowledge transfer.
- Represents the Company with customers and business partners.
- Ensures safe work practices are followed by consistently attending required EH&S training for all staff members, reporting all safety incidents and near misses on a timely basis and maintaining the goal of “zero” lost time incidents.
- Engage in continuous improvement for processes included in and adjacent to job role. Recognize and resolve customer satisfaction issues (both internal and external).

- Fan specific engineering technical knowledge is accumulated, developed, and properly utilized.
- Ability to perform engineering tasks and make technical decisions with minimal supervision.

Experience, Competencies and Education
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or METechnology, or the equivalent.
- Ability to perform & understand engineering calculations.
- Computer literate, with either the knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly learn, engineering selection programs, business systems, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Autodesk Inventor, and AutoCAD.
- Ability to interpret and understand engineering drawings and bills of material.
- Automation background/experience
- Machine Design background/experience - weldments, sheet metal design, spec. purchased components.
- Familiarity with various industry standards: i.e. API, MIL, SAE, ANSI, ASME, and ASTM.
- Experience composing professional documents such as reports and procedures.
- Knowledgeable of fabricating and assembly of heavy industrial products.
- Logical problem solving skills, outstanding organizational skills, and dedication to quality and integrity. Proven ability to quickly assess complex issues and identify root causes/key success factors.
- Ability to make a technically sound decision and accept responsibility for that decision.
- Motivated, self starter, with the ability to perform duties with minimal supervision and achieve goals.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.
- High moral and ethical standards, demonstrating respect for the individual and team, and setting an example for compliance with laws, regulations, and corporate requirements.

Desirable
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience within an air and gas handling, rotating equipment, or heavy industrial firm.
- Experience with 2D and 3D CAD software packages.
- Experience with Programming: VB.net, C#.net, AutoLisp
- Experience with computer programming.
- Experience in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement environment.
- Experience working in a matrix organization where influence, indirect leadership and compelling ideas are used to accomplish organizational objectives.
- Experience working with ERP and other technology tools.
- Advanced degree.
- Professional Engineering license or the ability to obtain one.
