Design Build Coordinator
General Summary
- This position is responsible for assisting in coordinating the interface between the Designer’s Discipline Leads, the Construction Team and Owner Representatives during the Technical Proposal, Design and post-design services phases of a Design Build Project
Essential Job Accountabilities
- Understand, participate in and fully comply with Granite’s and project specific safety procedures & policies
- Comprehensive understanding of the project’s prime contract documents, schedule and budget as well as the agreement with the designer, design schedule and design budget.
- Basic understanding of applicable design criteria and codes
- During the Technical Proposal and Design Phase of the Project
- Manage the coordination of constructability reviews, development and approval of design improvements through the use of task forces
- Co-ordinate design efforts so that the design budget and schedule are satisfied while providing a design that meets the requirements of the Request for Proposal (RFQ) and can be constructed within the overall budget and schedule
- Perform and coordinate quantity take-offs as necessary to monitor scope growth, determine impact of design changes, and to determine final quantities
- Track, document, monitor and report on design progress including deliverable status, design man-hours expended, design man-hours remaining, and other metrics as required
- Head up development of Alternate Technical Concepts (ATC's) and the corresponding required Owner submittal information
- Estimating or working with Estimators to determine the cost benefits of potential design changes
- Involvement in writing and review of the Technical Proposal
- During the Post-Design Phase of the Project
- Coordinate the interface between the Designer, Quality and Construction teams to insure that shop drawing reviews, design variations, information requests and non-conformance resolution is done in a cost effective and timely manner
- Maintain a tracking system that distinguishes and identifies design costs that are the responsibility of the construction team (post-design services) and that are the responsibility of the designer (clarifications and errors)
- Track, monitor, and report costs for post-design services.
- Extensive and extended overnight travel required.
Education
- BS degree in Civil Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) Certification preferred
Work Experience
- 5+ years’ experience in the heavy civil construction field preferred.
- 2+ years’ experience on a Design Build Project in design and/or design coordination role
- EIT preferred
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Proficiency with all MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Familiarity with CAD and Modeling Software (such as Microstation, Geopack, Inroads, HEC RAS, etc.)
- Knowledge of construction operations
- Strong quantity take-off skills
- Estimating skills sufficient to allow comparison pricing of design alternatives at a conceptual stage
- Basic knowledge of [Company] Cost and CPM Scheduling Systems
- Strong written and oral communication skills
