Camborne School of Mines
First Quantum Minerals Professor in Mining Education (Ref. R10989)
Competitive salary reflecting qualification and experience
The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, with the support of First Quantum Minerals Limited, is seeking to appoint an experienced and innovative individual to create a world-leading research area in Mining Education. The post is based at the University's Cornwall campus in the Camborne School of Mines, which has over a hundred years of experience, and a world-wide reputation, in educating mining professionals and in mining research.
The successful applicant will seek creative and well-researched solutions to address the global shortage of mining professionals that has been created by the continuing expansion of the mining sector but decline in the number of students trained. Well researched programmes are needed at all levels including university degrees, CPD routes and apprenticeships. A particular challenge is to devise ways to ensure that staff drawn from populations local to mine sites are trained to achieve their full career potential.
The research will be carried out by working closely with the mining industry and especially with First Quantum Minerals Limited.
We are looking for an internationally recognised researcher, with a history of attracting research funding and the ability to attract other top-quality researchers and educationalists to the group, or a senior member of the mining industry with a strong track record in staff development and training who will thrive in a university environment.
The post holder will develop a programme of world-leading research in mining education, and use this, and associated teaching, to generate additional income for the university from existing and new courses. The research will enhance our reputation as a global leader in training professionals for the mining industry.
This post has a competitive remuneration package (including substantial start-up costs) to reflect the international quality of the person we seek to appoint.
