Metallurgical Process and Quality Engineer Supervisor

Position Description

  • Just minutes outside of Champaign/Urbana our Danville, ILL facility is experiencing significant growth. Reporting to the Plant Manager the Metallurgical Process and Quality Engineer Supervisor provides high level technical support and serves as the primary technical leader to an automotive aluminum sheet finishing manufacturing area, Laboratories or product line.

Technical support and oversight includes:

  • Determination of Metallurgical practices
  • Product/process development and improvement
  • Inspection and test planning
  • Product disposition/elimination and material review
  • Determining root cause and corrective actions
  • Provide primary customer support and guidance
  • Determination of quality policy and setting the tone for plant flow path
  • Ensure compliance of quality systems (ISO and TS 16949) and be sure they are performing correctly

Additional Responsibilities

  • Lead quality systems activities within the manufacturing and product area
  • Lead product and process improvement initiatives utilizing the appropriate quality and Alcoa Business System (ABS is Alcoa's internal form of Lean Initiatives) tools
  • Lead, teach and mentor area personnel to understand process and product interaction, customer application and quality systems
  • Understand and maintain critical processes and product characteristics of Aluminum sheet finishing and how these interact with other upstream and downstream processes, include customer use
  • Understand business objectives impacting your area and how to apply objectives to prioritize efforts
  • Provide leadership in in capability and compliance technical audits
  • Understand and apply ABS principles in solving problems and deploying solutions related to the process and process management systems
  • Provide support to [Company] Environmental, Health, and Safety practices and policies. This includes helping to enforce safe work practices, ensuring that those under your mentorship are properly trained, and being responsible for your own safety
  • Understand cost build up of processes or products in their area
  • Responsible for taking action to ensure that all employment practices under his/her control, including hiring, promotions, demotions, and discipline are conducted in compliance with equal employment opportunity laws and Alcoa policy with regard to race, gender, religion, national origin, age, or physical ability

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of ISO and TS 16949 Quality System Standards
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with cross functional teams in development and execution of objectives
  • Effective program management skills with an understanding of and ability to utilize lean practices           
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor, coach, and develop employees under your direction

Basic Qualifications    

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 years metallurgical and/or quality experience within a manufacturing environment. This includes product technical reviews/disposition, improvement initiatives, and leading quality system activities in ISO/TS 16949
  • 2 years of supervision experience within a manufacturing environment environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Metallurgical Engineering/Material Science is strongly preferred
  • Quality experience within the metals industry
  • Knowledge of workplace policies, procedures, and practices related to Human Resources /Industrial Relations within a Union facility
  • Work experience and knowledge of principles and concepts of lean manufacturing used for effective business results
