Truck Superintendent
Position Summary:
- Oversee, Direct, Supervise and coordinate the efforts of Drivers and Trucks engaged in the scheduling and delivery of Concrete, Sand and Gravel. Superintendent is responsible for the direction and administration of all transportation activities for all lines of business. Balances and delegates supervisory and detail level responsibilities based on seasonal workload requirements and Company needs. Seeks necessary assistance from Managers and must utilize all program resources to include Viewpoint, Infield, Productivity Model, TRACKIT, and OPS Commercial Tools to monitor and improve transportation efficiencies. Able to maintain good Customer/Employee Relations and Services.
Safety:
- Perform and Document Weekly Safety Tool Box Talks with all Employees under your direct Supervision.
- Ensure all Employees are scheduled accordingly to attend Mass Safety Meetings.
- Responsible for reporting and documenting all Accidents, Incidents, and Near Misses to the Safety Manager with the required paperwork immediately.
- Monitor and Delegate Safety Compliance Requirements.
- Update the CY/MH and Safety Board Daily for the Drivers.
- Ensure all Drivers are “Fit for Duty” Daily.
- Ensure Pre and Post trip inspections are done daily and any maintenance items are documented on the DVIR’s and communicated to the Maintenance Department.
- Ensure job sites and private sites are safe for entrance and exit of the trucks.
- Ensure the vehicles being operated are safe by the guidelines set forth by this Company.
- Schedule and Document Ride a longs with Drivers to review Safety Performance.
- Assure compliance with all regulatory mandates governing worker safety and equipment operation.
- Ensure the proper training of all Employees for the Vehicles they are operating.
- Enforce all the Safety Requirements described in the Safety Policies and Procedures Manual.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Directly Supervise all Mixer Truck Drivers, Dump Truck Drivers and all the Trucks within the Fleet. Staff Drivers based on Seasonal Requirements and Company needs.
- Responsible for Driver Hiring, Employee Evaluations, Disciplinary Actions, Accident Investigation, Accident reporting. All of the above requires prior approval by Sales Manager and HR Department in accordance with the Company’s Policies and Procedures.
- Ensure Materials can and will be delivered according to the order while making the most efficient use Personnel and Equipment.
- Coordinate with the Construction Department Superintendents the daily schedule for Construction Trucking.
- Determine which equipment and personnel will be used based on load size, truck and driver capabilities, terrain clearance, job site conditions, legal restrictions, and customer requirements.
- Coordinate deliveries with customers, sales, production, quality control, operators and other personnel as required regarding special materials needed, customer requirements and plant and equipment availability. Maintain radio contact with all vehicles. Maintain working knowledge of city streets and county roads to assist drivers in locating specific job sites.
- Assist customers/employees in determining proper mix and amount of product required. Refer quantity product orders or questions and non standard orders to the Sales Department. Refer customer complaints regarding any orders, truck or driver/customer problems to the Sales Department for follow up. Maintain good customer/employee relations at all times.
- Maintain all communication devices including Track It, Command, Viewpoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, radios and telephones.
- Communicate with the Sales Manager on any driver commendations, disciplinary actions or productivity issues. Communicate Management issues to drivers and drivers concerns to Management.
- Schedule driver vacations and communicate unexcused absences, excused absences and tardiness to the Sales Manager. Communicate any and all information concerning drivers, customers, production and sales to the sales Manager.
- Develop and Maintain an accurate Employee schedule to minimize overtime and utilize our strongest resources in the appropriate places.
- Utilize our own assets and trucking first. Identify lease haul operators and establish hired hauler lists at the best negotiated price. Ensure all contracts and insurance is up to date and filed for each hired hauler. Assist Dispatchers with Hired Hauler Tickets to ensure accurate charge times and correct hourly rates. All Hired Haulers will require prior approval by the Sales Manager.
- Attend all Superintendent scheduling meetings. Develop a weekly spreadsheet to organize and schedule Construction’s needs.
- Monitor and communicate reports on daily costs. (Cycle times, tons/MH, $ /CY ECT.)
- Communicate with Superintendents on Haul Targets and Specific Job Costs for Trucking.
- Other Duties that may be required
Maintenance:
- Schedule all truck repairs with Maintenance Department. Constant Communication is required to ensure the Safe operation of our Vehicles at all times.
- Monitor Fleet Maintenance Schedules on all Trucks within the Fleet.
- Enforce the maintenance and cleanliness of the trucks. Allow adequate time for drivers to wash and grease their trucks on a weekly basis.
- Ensure trucks are not being abused and being taken care of properly.
- Ensure each Driver is trained and has had the appropriate training on Vehicle Maintenance.
Required Skills:
- Time Management-Must be able to efficiently manage one’s time and the time of others. Demonstrates the ability to work without direct Supervision. Must be able to schedule Driver times for maximum efficiency.
- Manage Personnel Resources-Must be able to motivate, train, develop and direct personnel while they work. Identify the required needs and utilize the proper personnel for the tasks required. Must act as a trainer on Smith Systems and required DOT training.
- Active Listening/Speaking- Must be a good Communicator. Must be able to listen to Employees questions and concerns and effectively communicate with all Customers, Drivers and Management. Must possess the qualities of communicating information and ideas in speaking or in writing that others can understand. Must be able to handle complaints, settle disputes, resolve and negotiate conflicts.
- Computer Knowledge: Must be able to generate Command, Track It and Maintenance reporting for daily and or weekly reviews. Required to train all parties on TRACK IT system. Required to utilize Viewpoint to generate detail on Trucks and Job Cost for daily review. Must be able to utilize Command for looking up Customers and reviewing trucking schedules daily. Must be able to utilize Excel for building Spreadsheets for accurately maintain schedules, trucking needs and maintenance needs. Must be able to utilize Microsoft Word for generating detail on Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses.
- Able to perform any and all other Duties that may be assigned.
