Position Summary:

  • Reports to Applications Technology Manager.  Responsible for the following:
  • Provides leadership and training to blasters within the region to accomplish Region Training Plan.   Provides technical support to customers upon request.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct and assess blaster and equipment operator competency to ensure the best practice in designing the blast with the correct, safe, and the most effective use of explosives.
  • Support the implementation and use of Take 5 and other proactive safety tools to promote personal responsibility for safety.
  • Active member of the Region HSEQ Forums and Incident Review Board meetings.
  • Report and investigate blast related incidents through the region and Loss Control. Blast investigations include flyrock, unsatisfactory service or products, as determined by region management.
  • Investigate all product complaints and poor performing blasts and report these to the proper plants, regional management and the Senior Technical Resource Manager.
  • Lead the site and interface with Region and SLC HSE personnel to implement HSE management system, Engineering Standards and enforce regulatory Health Safety, Environment requirements.
  • Perform annual Blaster Survey for SLC HR used to track equipment belonging to DNA, number of blasts and their locations relative to structures.
  • Ensure quality of service by minimizing losses related to operations.
  • In conjunction with marketing goals, implement continuous improvement opportunities by directing and planning workflow, following management policies and procedures to meet customer expectations, business objectives and budget goals to promote the site’s long-term viability, productivity, and profitability.
  • Prepare and submit proper paperwork to document expenses, sales calls, trade shows, and sales in order to maintain proper records for cost control.
  • Perform the Risk Assessments on all business (new and old) within the service region.
  • Support DynoConsult to develop expert capability in Value-In-Use applications, including electronic detonators, gassing and blasting technology.
  • Respond professionally and timely to address problems and business requests.
  • Understand and enhance service requirements to continually improve customer profitability.
  • Perform advanced work of a similar nature to that of subordinates in order to ensure the completion of assigned work in order to achieve budget and production goals.
  • Comply with applicable regulatory health and safety policies and practices in order to ensure personal safety and the safety of all employees, company assets, environment and regulatory compliance.
  • Effectively use and promote the MHP (Managing Human Performance) process for goal setting, providing feedback, developing employees and assessing job performance.
  • Decision Making Authority:  Make decisions of a low to moderate degree of complexity.
  • Major Challenges: Managing Customer expectations with late production schedules and deliveries.
  • Other duties may be assigned within the capabilities of the successful candidate, as determined by management.

Requirements:
Education:

  • Bachelors degree in area of responsibility or equivalent education, training, and experience (degree preferably in Mining, Geo-technical, Mineral, and/or Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering).
  • Advanced Degree in Geo-technical, Civil Engineering, or related experience a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years working experience with progressively increasing professional responsibility with leading edge technology to achieve results.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in explosives or blaster experience.

Technical:

  • Must satisfy the requirements for a "Possessor of Explosives" as defined by the Bureau of Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
  • Acquire and maintain all appropriate licenses and certifications required by federal, state and county entities (e.g. blaster licenses and CDL’s for commercial drivers with HAZMAT, Air Brakes with applicable endorsements).
  • Current MSHA certification for Part 46 and 48.
  • Ability to use, or learn to use as needed:  Laser Profiler, Drill Stakes, Scaled Aerial Maps, Computer Design, Laser Range Finder, Quarryman System®.
  • Ability to competently complete a blasting report, inventory records and other appropriate documentation.
  • DNA Certified Technical Trainer.  When the minimum number of quarterly blasts has not been shot, approval to conduct a blast must to be given by the Region Manager, and a review of the Surface Blasting SOP must be performed before any more shots can be made.
  • Thorough knowledge of DN products, competitor’s products, and the explosive and mining industries and practices.
  • General knowledge and understanding explosives technology, basic geology and seismology.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Managing People: Position supervises area blasters. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Work Environment & Physical Conditions:

  • Working conditions are primarily outdoors in all weather conditions of temperature and climate.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places.
  • Requires frequent exposure to long distance driving, road hazards, hazardous and explosive materials, and machinery at work sites (mines, construction, manufacturing plants).  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand, squat, lift, and use hands with fine dexterity for wiring, blast hook-up, instrumentation tie-in, etc.  May require occasional lifting of 60 lbs. (30 kg). 
  • Ability to physically travel and get in and out of trucks in remote locations and wear protective equipment where required.
