Canadian Natural’s Thermal Group is based in the Wolf Lake area which is located approximately 50km North of Bonnyville, Alberta and supported by the Cold Lake and Bonnyville communities. We operate 4 plants connected to multiple field wells in the area. Canadian Natural’s large oil production process includes:
• Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS)
• Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD)
The facilities include multi-plant crude de-hydration units, 4 steam plants along with 85MW cogeneration power plant and 3 recycle water reuse units with extensive brackish water conditioning facilities.

THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Control Systems Specialist will provide direction to engineering companies for instrument and controls activities on Canadian Natural’s thermal (SAGD and CSS) projects. The successful candidate will work with local engineering companies, assist with the development and review of engineering documentation (such as P&ID, shut down key, instrument loop diagrams) to ensure project objectives are met.
HOW WILL YOU MAKE YOUR MARK?
Review bid packages for Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors
Provide technical expertise and have a working knowledge of provincial, national and international standards particularly HSE, ISA & CSA standards
Provide interpretation and advice on technically complex issues for control systems
Assist in developing instrument standards and specifications pertaining to installation, maintenance, and reliability
Participate in the Process Safety Management programs in the areas of Safeguarding, HAZOP, P&ID Reviews, Equipment Integrity, Risk Management, Operating and Maintenance Procedures, Process Change Review, Incident and Accident investigations
Assist with the development and updating of procedures for instrument maintenance, calibration, spare parts
Keep informed of new and emerging instrumentation technologies that are applicable to thermal operations
QUALIFICATIONS:
Typically 10 years of demonstrated upstream oil and gas/refinery experience (or a similar industrial engineering background) with an Engineering Degree
Registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA
