Superintendent Nickel Refinery

Our client listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange is a diversified natural resource company that produces base metals and thermal coal. An exciting opportunity exists within their East African operation for a Superintendent experienced in production planning, implementing policies, procedures, and selection and training of personnel to safely and efficiently operate the Nickel Refinery.

Main responsibilities include:
  • Provide direction and supervision for the Nickel Refinery section, meeting safety production and product quality targets set by the Plant Management team;
  • Work with the site maintenance personnel to ensure that the facilities are properly maintained to yield high equipment reliability, and cost effective coordination of maintenance activities;
  • Ensure that operators receive effective training to meet the requirements of their positions and achieve competency to operate all equipment and systems within the plant in a reasonable time frame;
  • Ensure that all operating procedures, training documents, drawings, etc. are continuously updated to reflect current plant operation;
  • Ensure that safety and environmental procedures and standards are followed by plant personnel, and maintain close collaboration with the HSE department to ensure all workers are trained in safety and environment matters;
  • Participate in preparation of annual operating and capital budgets;
  • Select and train capable local national personnel for supervisory and management positions within the Department;
  • Work with technical and engineering staff in programs for ongoing improvement of plant performance and equipment on-stream time and cost reduction;
To be successful for this position you will have the following:
  • Tertiary qualified in Metallurgical Engineering with at least 10 years of supervisory operational experience in a Nickel Refinery;
  • Several years experience in the start-up operations of a large multi-facility process plant employing nickel and cobalt reduction, mixed sulphides stripping areas and an ammonium sulphate production plant;
  • Strong background in supervision of operators, maintenance planning, troubleshooting and administration;
  • Mobility, fitness and ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplined team;
  • Strong communication skills and a proven record of mentoring and training of personnel, being fluent in English is mandatory, French is desirable;
