Assistant Project Manager (Studies & Design)

The purpose of the role will be to oversee a number of single technical discipline projects or manage multi-disciplinary teams of professionals largely from Balfour Beatty Operating companies. The role will depend on project scale and complexity and on a best for client / best for business basis to execute concept studies, prefeasibility and feasibility studies and detail designs in accordance with Clients 
policies and procedures and PB GM processes and procedures and produce deliverables within client and PB GM expectations. Our clients generally have detailed requirements for the preparation of their studies and designs and numerous approval gates for subsequent project funding and progression into construction. Our client’s procedures prescribe the minimum standards for the study deliverables.

Typical studies and the study elements are:


Concept Study

Generally a mining concept study will include;
  • Relationship to a strategic plan
  • Project milestones and indicative delivery schedule
  • Financials (NPV, P/B + IRR)
  • Funding requirements and opportunities
  • Alternatives
  • Operations risks and opportunities
  • Financial, tax, commercials
  • Approvals and authorities
We are regularly engaged at concept to evaluate and verify the resource, undertake mine planning, prepare process designs and infrastructure designs and advise on planning permitting. Work at this stage is conceptual and estimates at this stage are generally prepared by engineering resources/consultants to an accuracy of +/- 30%.

Pre-Feasibility Study

Generally a pre-feasibility study will develop and evaluate options developed during the concept phase. A cost estimate will be developed based on some additional engineering, with the order of accuracy improving to +/- 25%. During this phase options raised in the Concept Phase will be assessed and execution options developed and evaluated.
The deliverables from a pre-feasibility study will generally be;
Refined financial analysis based on improved accuracy cost estimates
Options analysis and solution recommendation
Project and delivery Risk assessment and schedule
Funding requirements and opportunities
Recommendation for feasibility study preparation

Feasibility Study

The feasibility study phase generally produces the final business case for the Client Board’s evaluation and details the expected project costs and outcomes.
The outcome of the feasibility study is a business case covering the following areas of a Project’s Development:
  • Project description and goals
  • Legal and Permitting
  • HSEC
  • Geology & Resource Estimate
  • Marketing
  • Mining Plan
  • Materials Processing and Handling
  • Mine Site Facilities & Supporting Infrastructure
  • Impacts on external infrastructure
  • Operating Philosophy
  • Human Resources & Employee Relations
  • Capital Cost Estimate
  • Operating Cost Estimate
  • Project Delivery Models, PEP and associated Schedule
  • Project Risks and opportunities
  • Whole of Project Economic Model

Detail Design

Following Project Approval by the client and determination of delivery methodology, detail design would include:
Preparation of designs and specifications to the standard necessary to meet the delivery method (DTC, D&C)
Assistance with technical matters during procurement of suppliers and throughout the delivery phase

  • Assistance with commissioning and handover. 
  • Operating Philosophy

  • Project Delivery Models, PEP and associated Schedule
  • Project Risks and opportunities

Detail Design
