Coal Operations Analyst

Position Summary

  • Primary duties include data assimilation and analysis to assist in the development of the Profit Objective and Long Range Plan for Coal operations. This will be accomplished through the development and periodic updating of assumptions of the plan as they relate to the forecasting of production schedules, marketing, capital and project expenditures, operating expenditures within his or her area of responsibility. Analyst will coordinate with multiple departments such as Operations,
  • Marketing, Geology & Geosciences, Land, Corporate Strategy, Supply Chain Management, Business Development, Accounting, Treasury and Tax. The analyst will learn and perform economic analyses through discounted cash flow models to support the Capital Planning and Budgeting department in the efficient allocation of capital to various projects. These analyses will include sensitivity analyses, decision trees and probabilistic modeling. The analyst will also perform other analyses in support of the various departments mentioned above on a time to time basis. These analyses may include, but are not limited to, mineral asset acquisitions, field development optimization, business contract negotiations, etc.

Target Responsibilities

  • Works with all Coal related groups to identify, forecast, and enter into forecast models all assumptions necessary to accurately forecast production, revenue and costs.
  • Perform economic analyses as required to support assumptions and development plans.
  • Work closely with Coal operations in the development of capital and operating expense budgets.
  • Supports Coal operations through economic analyses of special projects.
  • Perform sensitivity analysis to evaluate alternatives.
  • Perform economic analysis on Coal production programs, Coal related projects and acquisitions.
  • Assists in the development and refinement of forecast models.
  • Assists in the identification of new techniques to support the Capital Planning & Budgeting team in their daily functions

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree is required. Degree in finance, accounting, economics, or energy related field is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office® applications such as Excel, Powerpoint and Access.
  • The analyst will be required to complete internal training to equip him/her with the necessary skillset to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Must be willing to learn. Initial time commitment from analyst will be substantial to move up the learning curve. Analyst will receive substantial support from supervisors to accomplish this task
  • Some travel will be required.
