Piping Designer

Summary of Position:

The Piping Discipline Lead represents the Piping Department at a project level. Under the direction of the Project Engineering Manager and with support from the Piping Department Manager, the Piping Discipline Lead is responsible for the design and engineering of all piping deliverables relative to safety, operability, fabrication, constructability, schedule and budget. This is achieved by the direction of a large group of technical production staff.

 

Responsibilities:

To perform this role successfully, the individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Establish the detailed project scope of work.
  • Author discipline design, stress, material, fabrication and construction specifications/criteria.
  • Support the project material requisitioning, evaluation and procurement philosophy.
  • Ensure Company and Client Quality, and Safety policies, standards and procedure are met on all piping deliverables.
  • Develops project specific Design Bulletins and procedures.
  • Technical direction toward the development of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Maintains control and change of the Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams.
  • Provides technical guidance and solutions to unusual design and field engineering problems.
  • Plans exposure of and provides technical guidance to junior personnel in areas requiring learning.
  • Presentation of deliverables to client in formal reviews.
  • Technical reviews of other projects.

 

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Create, implement and monitor project specific quality plans.
  • Prepare detailed man hour estimates and manpower planning schedules.
  • Manage allocated manhours and prepare engineering and schedule change notices.
  • Design progress control and reporting into Project Management and Control Tools.
  • Provide input to project staffing requirements, acquisition and demobilization.
  • Prepare design briefs.

 

Key Competencies:

  • A thorough knowledge of process and utility piping and interpretation of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams in Mining and Metallurgy and Petrochemical industries.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standard practices and procedures.
  • Ability to manage scope change and direct a large group of designers.
  • Significant understanding of Stress Analysis and Material Requisitioning and purchasing.
  • Efficient decision making and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to resolve most conflicts.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Able to adapt to workflows in a 2D or 3D environment.
  • Technical writing for all Piping Specifications and Design Procedures.

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum technical college graduation.
  • Twelve to fifteen years plus experience in Mining and Metallurgy including Slurry handling, and Petrochemical Process and Utility Piping Layout and Design.
  • Three to five years of experience must be in a leadership role in an EPCM environment.
  • Working knowledge of 3D and 2D design software, PDS or AutoPlant. Smart Plant 3D preferred.

  • 7+ to 10 years of experience
  • Willing to travel occasionally
  • Process Piping Knowledge
  • Significant understanding of Stress Analysis
  • Ability to lead a group/project
  • Workflows in a 2D or 3D environment
  • Decision making capabilities
  • Communicates well
