Environmental Science & Sustainable Technology Staff Engineer
Position Description
- [Company] had a dynamic opportunity for an Environmental Science & Sustainable Technology (ESST) Staff Engineer to work at the Alcoa Technical Center, located in [Company] Center (New Kensington) PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The [Company] Technical Center is [Company] largest research, development, and applied engineering laboratory. [Company] Technical Center occupies a 127-acre campus with an additional 2,019 acres of rolling countryside. This facility is the world’s largest light metals research and development center with a full range of lab capabilities, from bench-scale to full production-scale equipment. The facility has a diverse, multi-lingual workforce holding more than 100 doctorate and 200 master’s Degrees. The ESST Staff Engineer will report to the Section Head, Environmental Science & Sustainable Technology.
- [Company] has set very challenging environment, health, and safety (EHS) related sustainable development goals. In this regard, the main role of the Environmental Science & Sustainable Technology (ESST) Staff Engineer is to serve as the principal technical and project management lead for strategic environmental and sustainability research and development (R&D) related projects. To achieve these goals in an innovative and cost-efficient manner that will add to [Company] bottom line, this position is needed to:
- Establish and maintain coordination and collaboration among EHS, R&D, business unit (BU) production and Remediation personnel
- Provide focus and direction so the goals are met via innovative technologies/approaches, material recycle/reuse, and production process/product changes, rather than the more conventional end-of-pipe treatment approaches
- Provide guidance and mentoring to ESST personnel and [Company] Technical Center (ATC) technologists
- Develop, identify and transfer environmental and sustainability technologies and approaches across [Company] worldwide
- Bench-mark, collaborate, and engage entities outside of [Company] for the purpose of keeping abreast of the latest environmental and sustainability technologies and approaches that can benefit[Company] .
Major activities:
- Identify and develop creative and innovative solutions to problems of a conceptual nature, and /or develops new technology through exploration and synthesis of ideas, concepts, and existing technology
- Initiate and lead small technical projects; identifies needs and recommends project approaches
- Collaborate on projects, reaching beyond assigned responsibilities, to assist others as necessary to achieve goals, encourages collaborative relationships within project team or work group
- Establish project objectives and plans and reviews with a supervisor
- Act as a mentor within the technology area; consistently provides functional guidance to technicians and less experienced engineers.
- May also be required to supervise technicians and engineers to foster their technical growth.
Skills Required:
- Strong MS Excel
- Strong technical writing
- Excellent communication skills.
Basic Qualifications
- 7+ year’s professional engineering experience
- Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering + EIT certification OR a BS degree with a PE certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral Degree in Environmental Engineering
- Experience designing wastewater systems
- PE certification
- 10+ years professional experience in sanitary, industrial, and/or stormwater system design, operation, and regulatory requirements
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures for environmental sampling preferred.
