Tasks
- Summary The Transmission / Substation Designer is responsible for the detailed design of transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution lines. Job responsibilities include development of drawings, material lists and calculations required for the engineering and construction of new facilities, as well as major additions, rehabilitation, replacement, clearance and lightning improvements, and re-conductoring of existing electric lines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Build 2D & 3D transmission line models ready for analysis and design
- Build structure models and produce initial designs
- Sag wire, checking clearances and uplift
- Determine structure heights
- Generate Sag & Tension data
- Produce detailed Plan & Profiles
- Generate stakeout lists and assist with material lists
- Perform As-Built revisions
- Special projects and additional duties as assigned
- The Transmission / Substation Designer is expected to demonstrate a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town / city officials in a positive, collaborative and team-building manner. He / she will be preparing design deliverables for transmission lines including plan and profiles, structure loading analysis, structure and foundation design, conductor and shield wire analysis, material selection, detailed design of line hardware, access roads and construction specifications in compliance with safety, environmental and Client standards and policies. He / she will also review and approve drawings and material lists developed by other designers. Furthermore, the Transmission / Substation Designer will contribute to the development of project estimates and schedules, evaluate design options and criteria for technical merit, and conduct field visits to verify equipment condition and parameters. He / she will also review drawings for manufacturers and use pertinent information in the production of design drawings.
Requirements
- The Transmission / Substation Designer must have the ability to prioritize work and manage tasks for multiple projects under budget and time constraints. He / she needs knowledge of engineering economics, surveying, geographical information systems, electrical engineering, and environmental and legal regulations. Knowledge of electrical substation design or heavy industrial power systems is also required. Familiarity with ANSI, ASTM & ASCE standards and National Electrical Safety Code is a must. He / she must also have strong problem solving and analytical skills and must proficient on the computer.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microstation, and PLS-CADD Power Line Systems suite of transmission line design software
- Education and/or Experience: Approximately 6 or more years’ experience in Transmission Design; Associate or Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent Technical College diploma from an accredited engineering school is required
- Work Environment: The Transmission / Substation Designer will be assigned to report to a transmission line engineer for each project and will interface with other members of Project Execution teams.
