Corporate Safety Officer - Western Canada
Our client is a global leader with the design and manufacturing of high performance pumps and superior minerals processing equipment providing end-to-end solutions for all mining, transportation, milling, processing, and waste management activities. They pride themselves on an outstanding service and support program - including installation and commissioning, equipment monitoring, emergency repairs, on-site or in-shop servicing, engineering consultancy, customer training, and asset management expertise.
The Corporate Safety Officer role is a staff position based in Calgary, Alberta with travel as required within Western Alberta.
Responsibilities Include:
- Acts as a strategic partner and advisor to the organization regarding Health, Safety, and Environmental & Quality (HSE&Q) initiatives.
- Lead and implement Health and Safety initiatives to drive a "zero-accident" safety culture.
- Champion HSE&Q issues and procedures at all levels of the organization.
- Develop and implement Health & Safety policies and procedures, including internal and external audits.
- Manage the OHSAS 18001/ISO 14001 and company HSE&Q Safety Management and Quality system.
- Responsible for reviewing, planning, investigating and implementing solutions for all HSE&Q incidents or near-misses.
- Assist with the management of risks through Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and to ensure controls are being established to mitigate the risks
- Capture, communicate, and monitor HSE&Q Key Performance Indicators (KPI's).
- Represent company's HSE&Q interests with both internal and external customers.
- Liaise with HR, Quality, and Lean counterparts to develop related programs to support HSE&Q requirements.
- Oversee and coordinate safety training that is required to remain in compliance with all applicable regulation.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by direct supervisor.
Work Complexity & Major Relationships:
- Work is assigned in the form of high level strategic goals.
- Capable of managing concurrent HSE&Q projects and initiatives of complex and novel nature.
- Able to exercise influence over team members, employees and management level.
- Works directly with Senior Management to drive HSE&Q initiatives across all Western division locations.
Decision Making Autonomy:
- Makes independent decisions in planning, organizing and completing assignments.
- Exercises initiative and independent judgment in adapting and applying procedures to address unusual problem situations and resolve most conflicts.
- Independently solves problems or situations for which no clearly established procedures or precedents exist.
Requirements:
Education & Certifications:
- University degree and/or diploma specializing in Occupational Health & Safety OR Technical degree or diploma (engineering/science) with specialization in Health, Safety Environment & Quality (HSE&Q).
- CRSP Certification
Technical Skills Requirements:
- Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated experience implementing Health & Safety programs, with special focus on operations, warehouse, and field service environments.
- Demonstrated ability to lead HSE&Q function, including developing and maintaining audit processes.
- Demonstrated Proficiency in full Microsoft Office suite.
Knowledge and Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in managing a corporate Health & Safety function, preferably in manufacturing/Service settings
- In-depth knowledge of provincial health & safety regulations in Western Canada
- Proven track record of developing and implementing workplace HSE&Q policies, procedures, and initiatives.
- Experience in managing multi-site HSE&Q projects and budgets
- Knowledge of OHSAS-18001 & ISO14001 and ISO9001
- Exposure to mining, oil & gas, or related industries would be an asset.

- Ability to take initiative, developing and maintaining project plans and execution of outstanding actions.
- Ability to work independently and as a team player while solving complex problems and multitasking in a deadline-driven environment.
- Must be willing to/able to travel as required.
