Environmental Engineer

It is the environmental engineer’s responsibility to maintain an "Absolute Zero" safety environment for all employees, contractors, and other personnel assigned to provide environmental work or related activities within the Ohio Valley Operations.  The environmental engineer is responsible to provide environmental support to ensure the safe, effective, and regulatory compliant installation and operation of all surface facilities and systems to meet the operational and environmental requirements of the Ohio Valley Operations

Target Responsibilities

  • To provide environmental related services and support to the operations mines in coordination with operations and mine management and the operations and mine engineers.
  • To prepare environmental reports, documents, and/or submittals and to implement and/or monitor as required;
  • The environmental compliance of underground mining and surface construction activities
  • The scheduling of the maintenance and/or repair of the environmental controls
  • The required environmental sampling and monitoring of outfalls and locations as required by the permits
  • To identify environmental issues, problems and concerns and develop solutions with operations management and corporate staff to address and correct said issues, problems, and concerns.
  • To be thoroughly knowledgeable of the current and proposed environmental and mining laws, rules, regulations, and legislation of the state of West Virginia and the United States of America.
  • To accompany agency representatives visiting or inspecting the properties and operations of the company.
  • To be responsible for the safe completion of projects and activities as assigned.
  • To monitor the surface facilities and activities for the continual compliance with applicable company, federal, state and local environmental policies, rules, regulations and laws.
  • To report any potential non-compliance issues and to provide recommendations for corrective measures for said conditions to the Manager Engineering.
  • To develop environmental budgets and to monitor the related costs associated with the environmental activities to maintain compliance with the approved budget parameters.

Minimum Requirements

  • An Associate Degree in Environmental Sciences or related engineering degree or have equivalent experience as determined by management.
  • Require a minimum of five (5) years of related experience in environmental compliance work or mining operations.
  • A thorough knowledge of federal and state environmental laws and regulations and coal mining operations; including safety, production, and construction is preferable.
  • Require an MSHA Impoundment Inspection certificate or the commitment to obtain said certification.
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills.
