Responsibilities:

  • ECS seeks a Laboratory Technician/Field Technician for a new office in Pittsburgh, PA. When hired for this position you will be involved with routine geotechnical/construction materials laboratory including: soils, concrete and masonry laboratory test performance, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment, keeping the laboratory organized and in compliance with QA/QC initiatives, PENNDOT, AMRL and AASHTO accreditation requirements, calculations and data reduction of test results and other administrative duties, as appropriate. Because this is a new office location, there will be times that you will also function as a field technician performing soils and concrete testing in the field, additionally observing and documenting construction activities.

Work Environment:

  • The employee may be exposed to weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments. Noise levels will typically be moderate to moderately loud. Some weekend and overtime work may be required. You will at times also perform technician level duties.

Physical Requirements:

  • These physical demands are representative of what a laboratory and field technician may encounter and are essential functions of the position. 
  • You will be involved primarily with laboratory work involving long term standing and repetitive motions. 
  • You must have the ability to use your hands to handle, finger or feel; reach, climb or balance; crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit. 
  • You will have the ability to see and smell; including close, distance and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus. 
  • Lifting – The employee will regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 40 pounds [soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus]; frequently lift and/or move up to 60-80 pounds [soils and sand samples, and nuclear density equipment]; and occasionally move more than 100 pounds [such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples]. 
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Qualifications:

  • High School/GED diploma or a civil engineering degree.
  • 2+ years related soils/concrete laboratory/field experience.
  • Certifications - ACI Concrete Laboratory Technician and equivalent Soils Lab certifications or ability to acquire within 3 months.
  • Other certifications such as NICET Soils, WACEL Soils/Concrete and Laboratory, and others are a plus.
  • Technician Certification [minimum] - Radiation safety for nuclear density gauge, basic concrete and basic soils certifications. All three certifications are required within 180 days of hire.
  • Experience performing routine laboratory soils and concrete tests, Proctors, etc., are required.

  • ECS does not supply vehicles; therefore, you must be able to provide a vehicle suitable for use on construction sites. We will compensate you at $0.55/mile for use of your own vehicle for work related activities. Driver’s license verification required; must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the ECS driving policy.
