The Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geestacht in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a 3-year Postdoc Position (m/f) with a possible extension for the project "Earth System Knowledge Platform - Observation, Information & Transfer (ESKP)"
The department of Data Analysis and Data Assimilation at the Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht hosts a number of highly motivated and experienced researchers in the field of numerical modelling of regional coastal circulation, surface waves, sediment transport, data assimilation and remote sensing. The department is partner in ESKP, and the leader of Work package "Hochwasser, Stürme oder Sturmfluten, Erosion, Unfälle in der Deutschen Bucht" which aims at developing tools for synoptic analysis of coastal environment in the German Boight and elsewhere needed to solve practical tasks accompanying offshore activities (Öl- und Gasförderung, Windenergie) and address catastrophic events. The foreseen work combines modern observational methods, advanced numerical modelling and data assimilation. Specific users-oriented products will be developed including currents, wind waves, thermodynamic and biogeochemistry fields. Another focal activity will be concerned with the longer-term analyses of environmental changes and their relevance to solving practical problems related to Marine Strategy Directive and coastal protection.
The successful applicant will have a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or related disciplines. A strong background in modelling and programming, in particular ocean and/or atmosphere models is desirable. Good skills in scientific programming (FORTRAN) as well as working with computers (Unix/Linux) are expected, as well as good knowledge of the English language (written and oral).
Appointment will begin as soon as possible.
We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
