Environmental Officer

The successful candidate will be responsible for the environmental management system, interpreting and reporting on a daily basis. The Environmental Officer will further assist the Environmental Coordinator in identifying and managing the legal risks relating to environmental performance and ensure that the ISO14001 management system is functioning optimally.

Minimum Requirements:

• Post-Grad Qualification in Environmental Management and/of a suitable related field (e.g. Natural, Environmental, Earth Sciences)
• Minimum of 5 years experience in environmental management, monitoring, data analysis, report writing and working knowledge of ISO14001
• Valid public drivers licence (Code08/EB)
• PC Literacy and working knowledge in Microsoft Office and Windows System

Other Skills/Competencies:

• Environmental law certificate will be an advantage
• Sound verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills in English
• Must be able to present monitoring data to all levels of the organisation
• Specialist fields in the environmental sector (e.g. Zoologist, EIA's, Water registration, etc)
• Must be able to work individually and in a team

Knowledge of the following will be an advantage:

• EMPr, EMS Implementation and EAI Process
• National Environmental Management and Waste Act
• National Water Act
• Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act

Job Specification

Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Implementation and coordination of the Mine's Environmental Management Program (reports) to mitigate impact and adhere to legal compliance with regard to water and waste licensing
• Maintenance of an internationally certificate Environmental Management System:
• Review of policies & procedures,
• Aspect Identification and compilation of the impacts register and linking of legislation to aspects
• Develop and implement of objectives and targets
• Incident Management
• Develop and implement emergency plans
• Continuously monitor the effectiveness , suitability and adequacy of the programme
• Maintenance of the environmental discipline on IsoMetrix
• Rehabilitation initiatives
• Planning, coordinating and prioritizing
• Identifying operational needs, designing and implementing relevant environmental interventions , keeping abreast with new research and best practices
• Promote environmental awareness and ensure compliance with environmental standards
• Monitor and assess compliance by the operation to the programme and applicable legislation
• Develop and implement effective communication, training and awareness programmes
