Safety Manager/Safety Specialist

Job Description

  • Has oversight of safety training, auditing and inspection, compliance, record keeping, and application of safety programs at the mine site level.  As a direct report of the Mine Manager, the Safety Manager/Spec must set a high standard for safety performance, model safe work practices, and work in a team-like manner to provide the safest possible work environment.  Developing and fostering a strong safety culture through involvement of all employees is an essential role of the Safety Manager/Spec.  The Safety Manager/Spec shall lead incident/accident investigations, and through use of root cause analysis, determine corrective actions to prevent incident reoccurrence and implement mitigation measures.
  • Supervise safety coordinator(s), instruct, coach and mentor mine site supervision in application of safety practices and policy.  The Safety Manager/Spec will serve as the primary contact with MSHA.
  • Monitor workplace and employee behaviors to achieve safety through compliance.
  • Provide quality safety training.
  • Lead in maintaining compliance with Federal, State, and company health & safety regulations.
  • Participate in disciplinary proceedings involving violation of safety rules.
  • Stay current with changing or new regulations that are promulgated.
  • Provide current or historical data to other departments as requested.
  • Sponsor and provide guidance to the early return to work program, Mine Safety Committee and Rescue Team.
  • Provide assistance to all departments where questions of compliance are an issue.

Required Skills

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to speak in public.
  • Influencing and teaching skills.
  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation in State.
  • MSHA Surface Instructor rating (IS).

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health plus 5 - 6 years relevant experience, or 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of mining methods, safety regulations and safety engineering.
