Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Advisor

SMS Equipment Inc. supplies equipment parts and service to the construction, forestry and mining industries and utility product users. It was created to provide customers with integrated solutions and to expand our service capabilities as a nationwide organization.

OHSE Advisor - BC Operations

Reporting to the General Manager, BC Operations, the OHSE Advisor will ensure that SMS Equipment's managers and supervisors have the knowledge, tools, and support they need to manage the business from a safety perspective and to create an environment in which employees continue to grow, learn, and contribute to SMS Equipment's success. Overall, the OHSE Advisor is responsible for:

  • Developing OHSE management system documents, standards and procedures in conjunction with senior management
  • Collaborating with employees, managers and supervisors to identify and correct potential safety, health and environmental hazards
  • Preparing, coordinating and conducting audits of the OHSE programs for compliance with SMS standards and government regulations
  • Monitoring safety, health and environment performance and recommending actions for improvement
  • Providing staff support in specific safety responsibility areas
  • Coordinating monthly safety meetings and conducting OHSE training as required
  • Maintaining records
  • Travel throughout the British Columbia is required
  • Applicant will reside in the Lower Mainland or Kamloops, BC

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a post-secondary education in a related area (diploma or related course) and several years of relevant experience at the professional level. Additional qualifications include, but are not limited to:

  • A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Construction Safety Officer (CSO) certificate is considered an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to appropriately prioritize and execute tasks in high pressure situations
  • A drive to succeed in this role and to grow within SMS Equipment
