Landfill Operator

Job Description

• This position is primarily responsible for all aspects of landfill operations including: inspecting and spotting trucks entering and leaving the facility, general cleanup of the landfill area, sampling incoming materials, record keeping, general labor, and act as back up for all other landfill positions.
• May assist or cover for the Landfill Clerk. This includes printing tickets, monitoring and tracking pricing, visually and analytically inspecting loads (using PID Meter); works closely with supervisor and other facility personnel to assist in coordination of site functions including organizing fill activities, providing direction to customers, assures compliance with facility rules and company policies, monitors site activities, keeps facility data and reports; maintains facility compliance files and reports such as: cash transaction reports and daily facility logbooks; conducts facility banking;  inspects incoming loads for acceptability; provides customer service by answering phones and responding to requests for information on tickets and/or invoices; and directs customers to unloading/dumping areas, monitors trucks and drivers, litter control and general housekeeping functions.
• May also operate water truck and loader as needed; performs pre-trip vehicle safety inspection and reports vehicle condition to supervisor; checks all vehicle fluid levels at beginning of shift and adds fluids if necessary; fills tank of Water Truck with water at beginning of and throughout shift as necessary;  operates Water Truck/Loader/Dozer in a skillful, safe and efficient manner inside the landfill while observing all safety and health rules ; follows established traffic patterns avoiding hazards; operates sprayers to achieve and maintain appropriate yard surface moisture for dust control and soil compaction activities; fuels vehicle as needed and cleans vehicle at end of shift; and responsible for maintaining good housekeeping at and around site.

Required Skills

Education and/or Experience Required:

• High school graduation or its equivalent is required.  One (1) year previous experience in the landfill/construction/mining industry that has included dispatching and customer relations is preferred.  Previous experience operating dozer/loader and water truck is highly desirable.

Special Skills And Requirements:

• Experience or education in waste identification and solid waste regulations is preferred.  Skill in use of common office machines and personal computers is required.  Good interpersonal communication skills for interfacing with customers, dispatchers, and safety supply vendors are required.  Must have the Ability to operate various types of mobile equipment, such as a water truck, dozer and loader in a safe and efficient manner is a plus. Must have a Possession of or ability to obtain a class A or B CDL with a tanker endorsement and a clean driving record is desired.
