Senior Civil/Geotechnical Engineer (Mine Tailings Specialization)
Summary:
- Directs and reviews all technical activities related to civil and geotechnical engineering work with emphasis on mine tailing projects, including site geotechnical investigations and results interpretation, calculations and design, schedule and budget management, production of deliverables, technical supervision of construction, reporting and communications. While this position has an emphasis on tailing projects, projects may include water dams, heap leach pads, and other mining, renewable energy, and hydropower facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Investigate, assess and assist in securing assignments in the mining, water resources and possibly hydropower sectors. Provide knowledgeable contributions to the company’s overall marketing strategy. Maintain and develop existing and new clients through planned networking, business relationships and other business development initiatives.
- Become the client liaison in all matters related to the projects or prospects of the company.
- Review client information including, scope of work, procedures and requirements, diagrams and drawings, specifications and other documents, to determine the approach and work to be undertaken, budgeted, scheduled and implemented.
- Mentor, develop, and lead less experienced staff in completing work tasks to meet both client and internal quality/efficiency expectations. Emphasize teamwork and look for continuous improvement in all individual task and project work.
- Participate in and supervise preparation of technical work products such as design and cost estimates, reports, maintenance manuals, drawings, etc.
- Become the client liaison in all matters related to the project or the undertaking. Develop working relationships with the client representatives and staff. Control additions to the scope of work with change notices when addition to or deletion of work scope is requested. Document all aspects of the work throughout the period when the work is conducted, following the company policies and procedures to maintain correspondence files, electronic files, and all other materials that may provide documentation of the work performed.
- Understand and be able to work effectively in the engineering field of soil and/or rock mechanics or engineering geology.
- Interpret and analyze geotechnical data to determine type, classification, and engineering characteristics of materials.
- Direct field and office work programs associated with the projects of the company.
- Utilizing the above information or information provided by others, carry out calculations and designs of, or make recommendations for, project components including excavations, dams, foundations, fluid or mine waste impoundments, spillways, pipeline or penstock anchorages.
- Provide the technical expert review of study reports, plan drawings and technical specifications based on the designs or recommendations as required.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Technical Ability/Experience: Strong working knowledge of, and at least 12 years of experience in, soil or rock mechanics engineering or engineering geology in the mining and/or renewable energy industry.
- Education/Experience: Minimum of a Master's degree (M. Sc.) in civil engineering with a specialization in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology; registration or eligibility with the requisite experience to become registered as a Professional Engineer (P.E.).
- Language Ability: Successful candidates must be able to read, analyze and interpret engineering reports, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. They must also be able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, and to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, colleagues and the general public. Competency in a second language, both spoken and written would be considered has an advantage.
- Reasoning Ability: Successful candidates must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. They must also be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Office. Knowledge of Civil 3D, GEO-Slope programs, GINT, and other latest geotechnical design software would be an asset.
- Certificates and Licenses: Registration or eligibility, with the requisite experience, to be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) is required. A valid driver’s license is preferred.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: Ability to direct the work of and to supervise less experienced civil and geotechnical engineers.
- Work Environment: Work will be in both an office and field environment with travel to various outdoor sites determined by project needs. Adherence to safety standards including those of the firm, MSHA, OSHA is mandatory.
