We have an opening for a Metallurgist for the development of textured metal foils for high temperature superconductor wire. The successful candidate has expertise in deformation processing. An extensive knowledge of materials analysis and surface characterization is a requirement, as is a solid background in texture development in sheet metal. Experience with the processing of nickel alloys is desirable. He/she must be detail oriented, and able to effectively work on a number of simultaneous tasks within a dynamic team environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Development of alloys and composite strip for the manufacture of highly textured foils
  • Optimization of thermo-mechanical processing
  • Interaction and trouble shooting with external vendors.
  • Characterization and analysis of finished metal foil with special attention to surface texture.
  • Consult to various Production groups responsible for materials purchases and processing.
  • Technical interaction with metal vendors.

Requirements:

  • PhD or M.S. in Metallurgy, Materials Science or related field with several years of relevant experience in manufacturing environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of analytical techniques such as SEM, AFM, orientation imaging, EBKP, optical microscopy and chemical analysis of metals as required for data interpretation.
  • Solid background in physical metallurgy and thermodynamics of alloys and oxides.
  • Ability to analyze problems and implement solutions in manufacturing environment.
  • Formulate, execute and report on independent experiments.
