Mining Project Engineer



Fort Hills Oil Sands, a partnership between Teck Cominco, UTS Energy and majority partner and operator Petro-Canada, is in the early stages of developing its project plan and establishing its operations structure. With excellent reserves and a mega project beginning, the successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to be part of the decision making process and the formation of this world class venture.
 
Reporting to the Sr. Mine Project Engineer in the Petro-Canada Oil Sands Fort Hills group, the Mining Project Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the engineering performed and the project execution implemented on Petro-Canada Oil Sands capital projects follows the Petro-Canada project execution strategies, plan, procedures and standards. This position also must ensure that standards meet the relevant industry and legal codes. The position works with a number of different groups including personnel from Petro-Canada and various Engineering firms.
 
Accountabilities
  • Project management, direction and technical support to Petro-Canada Sr. Mine Project Engineer and Mine Technical and Mine Operations Group, as well as to engineering firms’ project engineers working on the project to ensure the successful execution of the Mining project component of the Fort Hills Oil Sands Project.
  • Provides technical input to cost estimates, engineering design, preparation of engineering specifications for equipment and materials procurement, cost monitoring, construction liaison
  • Evaluation of mine plans and equipment in terms of safety, reliability and cost effectiveness
  • Supplies project interface with respect to Project Managers, Regulatory, Technical Services, Operations and Safety departments.
  • Coordinates project needs with other engineering disciplines.
  • Identification and incorporation of opportunities to improve Petro-Canada specifications in areas such as safety, cost effectiveness, maintainability, reliability and/or any aspect of the engineering design cycle.
  • Design safety including safety features for construction, operation and maintenance; Hazops; and Total Loss Management requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with government regulations with respect to engineering designs and provides technical input to environment and regulator compliance requirements.
 
Specific Functional/Technical Skills
  • University degree in Engineering (Mining, Civil) with APEGGA qualifications.
  • Minimum of 4 to 6 years experience in a project engineering role, preferably in an oil sands mining environment, heavy construction environment or engineering contractor environment.
  • Familiar with typical technical specifications in all disciplines
  • Facilitative and investigative skills
  • Ability to source and apply best-in-class practices
 
General Skills / Knowledge / Attributes
  • Ability to make independent judgments and resolve issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage a variety of issues simultaneously within tight timeframes
  • Self motivated and a high level of energy to be successful in a dynamic project environment
  • Good non-authoritative leadership skills and able to operate in a team environment.
 
Additional Information
  • This position is initially based in Calgary. Relocation assistance to Calgary will be provided.
  • Frequent overnight visits to the Fort Hills site to oversee projects in the field will be required.
  • It is envisioned that once the Mining Project has reached operational status, this position will transfer over to the Mine Engineering Group at the Fort Hills Site.
  • The Fort Hills work site is located approximately 96 km north of Fort McMurray. Employees will have the initial option of commuting to the work site from their residence and residing in camp during their work rotation, or relocation to Fort McMurray.
