Laboratory Coordinator



Our client owns and operates one of the largest underground mines in Australia.
Their operation located in [Location]Western Australia produced 12,437t of copper in the March quarter, down from the 16,219t of copper produced in the previous quarter after a planned maintenance shutdown at the mine.
 
On their behalf we are seeking a suitably experienced Laboratory Coordinator to provide cost effective and efficient laboratory and assay services. Reporting to the Processing Manager the successful candidate will be required to manage a team of thirteen direct subordinates.
 
Prerequisites:
·         Minimum 5 years experience in the daily operation of a busy on-site laboratory
·         Commitment to working within a team environment
·         Good verbal and written communication skills
·         Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
 
Accountabilities:
·         OH&S (15%)
·         Maintain OH&S procedures for the handling of chemicals used in the laboratories.
·         Continuously monitor and improve work practices and procedures
·         Promote OH&S awareness and a maintain a high standard of housekeeping
·         Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements and obligations
·         Participate and initiate safety meetings, incident investigations and implement follow up action
 
Environment (10%)
·         Ensure faults which are, or may, adversely affect environmental standards are addressed proactively
·         Ensure timely investigations of all environmental incidents and implementation of follow up actions
 
Quality & Services (45%)
·         Establish and maintain assay procedures and techniques
·         Achieve a high level of accuracy and quality of assay results
·         Ensure timely results to meet metallurgical requirements
·         Ensure that all analyses provided by external contract services are conducted according to mining and processing requirements
·         Ensure a high level of competency in laboratory techniques by operating personnel
·         Liaise with metallurgists with respect to planning and resourcing project work
·         Calibrate and maintain analytical instrumentation to provide the desired accuracy of analysis
 
Costs (15%)
·         Support the identification and implementation of cost improvement opportunities
·         Contribute to the preparation of department operating and capital budgets
·         Monitor and control costs within budget parameters
 
Teamwork (15%)
·         Encourage the training and development of all employees to improve both skills and performance
·         Ensure consistency of rules and procedures across the shifts
·         Train and develop other staff to provide relief and rotation opportunities within the structure
·         Provide miscellaneous technical and management support for the department and site management team
 
Conditions:
·         12 hour days
·         8:6 roster
·         Rotating shifts
