PhD position in Economic Geology & Geochemistry

Applicants are invited for
a graduate research assistantship to participate in research on
platinum-bearing ore successions of the eastern Bushveld Complex, especially
the relationship between petrological development and ore distribution. The
project aims to obtain detailed petrological, mineralogical and geochemical
data to advance our understanding of the ore-forming processes especially in
the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Igneous Complex.
- The project will be
conducted in co-operation with the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und
Rohstoffe (BGR, Hannover) and will include sampling in the field, sample
preparation, transmitted and reflected light microscopy, mineral chemistry
(electron microprobe), geochemistry (LA-ICPMS), as well as data interpretation
and publication of the results.
The position is available
from 1 July, 2008 for a period of 3 years. Salary
level will be according to German public employee pay scale 50 % BAT IIa. It is
expected that the successful candidate assists with work in the laboratories
and the Economic Geology Practical.
- A completed Master, Diploma
or equivalent degree in geology/geological sciences or mineralogy is required.
Practical experience in geochemistry and economic geology would be very
desirable
- Good English communication skills are required
- The university
