Laboratory Technician



The Western Maryland Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc. (RC&D) invites applications for the position of Laboratory Technician at our Materials Testing Laboratory located in Tawes Hall at Frostburg State University

The laboratory supports engineering research for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Power Plant Research Program (PPRP), with our current focus on developing environmentally friendly uses for Coal Combustion Product (CCP), material comprised of ash and other substances produced by coal-fired power plants in the state of Maryland

This is a oneyear contracted position with benefits and the possibility of renewal. Annual salary range is $25,000 - $28,000 depending on experience and qualifications. The position entails both laboratory and limited field duties

  • The ideal candidate should have an academic background in geography, geology, or civil engineering
  • Candidates having experience in the esting of concrete, aggregate or determining the field density of soils are highly encouraged to apply
  • Candidates should be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds of weight and be free of any health conditions that would prohibit exposure to dust

Duties will include:

  • Measuring and adjusting pH levels in ongoing experiments on the weathering of grouts and flowable fills fabricated with CCP material
  • Fabricating compacted samples of soils, CCP, and channel dredge spoil stabilized with CCP material mixed with activators such as lime, lime kiln dust and gypsum
  • Fabricating samples of grouts and flowable fills using CCP material
  • Fabricating samples of stabilized grouts and flowable fills using ash produced by the incineration of municipal waste to generate power
  • Determining the unconfined compressive strength of samples using compression testing equipment designed for soils and cement
  • Performing particle analysis and moisture-consistency testing on soils and channel dredge spoil.
  • Performing other lab and field sampling duties as directed by lab personnel.
