Mechanical Engineer

Strategic Focus:

  • The company is expected to grow is size, spending over $600,000 in the remainder of 2008 and much larger amounts in 2009
  • A person will be needed to help coordinate these activities so that the expansion will be on time and perform to quality expectations in order to meet new orders.
  • Kiln performance is a critical component to the manufacturing process
  • Currently UIP has ceramicists and chemical engineers to analyze kiln performance
  • A mechanical engineer with knowledge of refractory material properties will fill a gap.
  • Cylinders, the foundation of further expansion, need to be ground to size.
  • The grinding operation can cause micro-crack that lead to eventual failure of the part.
  • We do not have a mechanical engineer and no one with expertise in cylindrical grinding
  • There are many nuances to grinding, incite and supervision needs to be implemented for this critical operation. 
  • Grinding operation performance is a major cost driver in the grinding department
  • Improvement in this area will reduce WIP, capital required, direct labor, and improve on-time delivery.  

Scope:

  • The position is needed to improve the performance of the furnaces and of the grinding operations
  • A person is also needed coordinate the installation of major pieces of equipment

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Recommend and enact changes to the materials and operating parameters of the kilns to improve product quality, increase kiln performance, and decrease operating costs. 
  • Ensure that proper operating procedures are being followed in the grinding operation.  Standardize work instructions and monitor production personnel.
  • Create drawings for the grinding operation based on customer specifications.
  • Assist the production manager and materials manager with product flow through the grinding areas.
  • Work with quality assurance to development of standards with regards to manufacturing production equipment and processes.
  • Manage all aspects of equipment installation, including budgeting, mechanical & electrical contractors.
  • Lead and/or participate on project teams for the design, construction and commissioning of manufacturing production equipment for the purpose of increasing production capacity or assisting R&D to scale up to pilot plant size operations.
  • Participate on corrective action teams to facilitate continuous improvements and deal with non-conformances.
  •  Support the company’s environmental policy and procedures
  • Identify and pursue any actual, or potential, significant environmental impacts associated with the job
  • Support the company’s site environmental objectives and targets
  • Assist with the implementation of ideas generated through the various environmental management system (EMS) teams.
  • Eliminate micro-cracks from the grinding operation – there are many unknowns.
  • Improve the materials life of the furnace. 
  • Improve product quality from the furnaces.
  • Management of multiple projects.
  • Coordinate with different departments
  • There are many sources of product defects, including from processes that are three steps upstread
  • It is difficult to recognize root causes of defects.
  • Expanding production requirements and facility usage as well as the introduction of new technology.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3+ years experience with ceramics, high temperature furnace, and grinding operations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are required to do the job effectively. 
  • In-depth knowledge is required in the following technical fields; high temperature furnaces, grinding of ceramics, cylindrical grinding, and chemical manufacturing processes
  • Skills in project management
  • Able to draw using SolidWorks or other software. 
  • Ability to interface with all levels on this site; operators, team leaders, technicians, engineers, department managers as well as the plant manager.
  • Ability to interface with outside contacts including equipment suppliers, panel designers, electrical inspectors, consultants, electrical and mechanical contractors.
