Operations Manager



Summary Description of Duties:

  • To lead the execution of the long-term strategy for multi-discipline functions within a mine, including some or all of the following departments: mine, mill / processing, maintenance, engineering and geology
  • To formulate short- and intermediate term business plans; ensuring alignment with the organizations overall strategy
  • To develop and operationalize long-term strategies to grow the mine operation and to ensure Kinross meets its strategic objectives
  • Develops and executes short- and intermediate-term strategies that support growth of the mine operation; ensures strategies are concretely linked to the organizations long-term strategy
  • Leads execution of strategies in the mine operation to enhance current mine operation practices and performance
  • Sets priorities and allocates resources
  • Manages the human, financial and operational resources of the mine operation
  • Formulates the annual operating and capital budgets for the mine operation consistent with Kinross established financial guidelines and business planning process
  • May assist in the management of the Joint Venture through Quarterly technical review and Joint Venture meetings
  • Manages major commodity vendor contracts
  • Participates in joint venture partner initiatives for global procurement to reduce materials cost
  • Negotiates major contract issues relating to contract maintenance, operating material, etc
  • Participates with other senior staff to set production goals and policy for the mine and then directs activities to achieve those productions goals
  • To develop and implement business practices and policies within the mine operation that align with the organizations overall strategy
  • Oversees the implementation of processes, policies, systems and practices within the mine operation that maximize operational efficiencies and competitive advantage
  • Acts as a change agent and project sponsor for key initiatives; models organizational values, sets the cultural tone and prioritizes business goals
  • Leads the Continuous Improvement program utilizing the tools necessary to meet the management operating philosophy
  • To lead and manage a senior leadership team responsible for executing the mine operation strategy
  • Identifies strategies and key performance goals and acts as an advisor to the direct reports; works to overcome challenges and barriers and minimize risk
  • Sets performance targets and measures, monitors and manages overall performance of the function and direct reports
  • Builds the capabilities of the team to enhance the mine operations ability to achieve the financial and operating strategy; hires appropriately, leverages the talents of the function and takes corrective action where necessary
  • Ensures there is a comprehensive and effective succession management strategy in place for the function; identifies succession role requirements and high potential talent and actively develops key talent
  • Develops policies and procedures relating to safety, the environment, and individual and organizational development
  • Ensures that direct reports and respective work areas are in compliance with Health and Safety policies and regulations
  • Ensures direct reports have the necessary training, skills, knowledge and tools to do their jobs safely
  • Provides support to all areas on issues that jointly involve production and safety
  • Observes operations to detect violation of safety regulations and compiles safety and production records
  • Assists in accident and incident investigations and ensures that recommendations are implemented by agreed upon dates

Qualifications:

  • University degree
  • Additional specialized education of up to 4 years including masters level degree or equivalent
  • Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise
  • More than 12 years of related work experience
  • Previous leadership experience
  • Experience leading teams within the mining industry
  • Detailed knowledge of all phases of mining, and the integration of the mining, milling, technical services and maintenance function
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
