Environmental Engineer



Summary Description of Duties:

  • Incumbent will work as part of a team to provide complete environmental services for a gold mining operation and ancillary facilities
  • Under the direction of the Environmental Superintendent, ensures that company activities are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and policy
  • Effectively interface with site personnel, regulatory agencies, governmental entities, and professional & industry associations
  • Maintain excellent rapport with regulatory agencies to foster a working relationship that minimizes adversarial actions and maximizes informational exchange
  • Complete permitting activities in a timely manner
  • To include application submittal, monitoring, and reporting
  • Ensure that company operations and projects are not restricted as a result of permit issues. Minimize penalties, fines, and violations
  • Coordinate and manage environmental projects, including contractor, consultant, and technician activities
  • Conduct regular and frequent inspections of company operations to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Conduct studies and research necessary for permit application or modification, feasibility, and problem solving
  • Monitor proposed environmental regulations, policies, and procedures and their impacts to RMGC activities. Inform Environmental management of changes that may affect the company
  • Ensure that departmental and company goals are achieved by participating in short and long-range planning activities.
  • Provide environmental awareness training to site employees
  • Conduct all activities in accordance with safety rules and regulations

Job Duties

  • May be responsible for managing or assisting with the following programs (not all-inclusive)
  • Environmental management system
  • Air quality program
  • Solid and hazardous waste management, including pollution prevention and waste minimization programs
  • SARA Title III, Toxic Release Inventory
  • Reclamation and closure planning
  • Water Pollution Control permitting
  • NEPA permitting
  • Potable and waste water systems
  • Water management programs, including discharge
  • Geothermal program
  • Materials management program, including State Fire Marshal Permitting
  • Right-of-Way and Special Use Permits
  • Radioactive materials program
  • Wildlife protection and management
  • Water rights management
  • Storm water management
  • Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure planning
  • Audits
  • Training programs
  • Monitoring programs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in environmental science or environmental engineering
  • A degree in a related science or discipline will be considered (i.e. geology, biology, civil engineering)
  • A minimum of 4 years of environmental experience
  • Preference will be given to hard-rock mining industry experience
  • Experience with mining law
  • Preference will be given to mining and Nevada law experience
  • Ability to effectively interface and work with site personnel, regulatory agencies, governmental entities, and professional & industry associations
  • Ability to correctly prioritize jobs and work effectively with multiple concurrent tasks
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
  • Ability to effectively relate environmental requirements to a diverse work force
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Skilled and experienced in using the following software packages: Microsoft Word Microsoft Excel Microsoft Access Microsoft Project AutoCAD
