Description
Reporting to the Manager Mine Operations, the Mine Production Manager is accountable for the loading and hauling of ore and waste in the safest and most cost effective manner. He/she is also accountable for the provision of adequate pit services to sustain production, and mine training.
 
Responsibilities for the safety performance of the department and the protection of the environment are vested in this incumbent, and he/she is responsible and accountable for the results obtained.
 
Accountabilities
  • The incumbent is responsible for managing the Fort Hills Mine activities. This includes the manning, training and safe operation of personnel working in the pits and the scheduling and deployment of mine operating equipment in the most productive and cost effective fashion.
  • The major challenge of the job is to optimize pit production in terms of quantity, quality, safety, environmental protection and costs while ensuring that the longer term implications of exploiting the ore reserves are adequately addressed. The immediate challenge of the job is to improve the operating methods to sustain cost effective production at consistent levels to meet the long term mine plans and budget. Primary focus is the development of an operating team to improve efficiency and implement tight cost control. To meet these challenges the incumbent requires extensive knowledge of mine engineering principles, mining practices, equipment capabilities, orebody geology and economics and appropriate regulations and standards.
  • The incumbent meets regularly with his/her staff to discuss safety, training, environmental control, costs and productivity and to set performance objectives. The incumbent ensures that performance data and production and safety goals are communicated to all levels in the organization.
  • The Mine Production Manager works closely with the Mine Technical Manager in the development of intermediate and long range mining plans, in the prioritizing of equipment and manpower utilization and in the development and implementation of projects to sustain, improve or expand mining operations. The incumbent works closely with the Mine Maintenance Manager to ensure maximum equipment availability and to evaluate equipment performance, modifications and/or replacements as the need arises. The incumbent also works in conjunction with the Bitumen Production Manager(s) to coordinate optimum ore feed.
  • The incumbent arranges for his/her subordinate staff to receive training in supervisory skills pertaining to employee motivation, training and discipline, and safety, mining and environmental regulations, ensuring that his/her staff adhere to a high standard in these facets of their job.
Capability Requirements
  • Professional Engineer
  • Mine Operations Experience - Team Lead level or above
  • Mine Technical Experience - Mine Planning, Mine Production
  • Business knowledge - Capital justifications, Budget development, operating cost control
  • Team Leadership - Experience in developing positive team
  • Goals Orientated
Responsible for department of +400 operators during Phase 1 of Fort Hills
Operating Budget - $300 million/year (2011)
