Description
Based in Calgary and reporting to the Drilling Superintendent, the successful candidate will be a member of a team of engineers supporting multi-disciplinary asset teams. Responsibilities broadly include the technical performance of Petro-Canada's drilling operations and alignment with the goals of our business partners. This position will be supporting oil sand SAGD and delineation core hole drilling operations in the Fort McMurray area.
This position is considered a developmental position into a specialist role, as well as future leadership potential.
Accountabilities
- Develop high quality project plans that include cost estimates, time schedules and project plan for drilling SAGD and delineation core holes. These include vertical wells, overpressured wells, deviated, and horizontal SAGD applications;
- Ensure drilling project alignment with corporate Total Loss Management policies;
- Work directly with Drilling Superintendent in timely resolution of planning and operational issues;
- Ensure integration of asset team members into the development and execution of drilling projects;
- Special projects include engineering and Life Cycle Value Assessment studies on technical issues and submissions;
- Ensure compliance with provincial and federal well licensing agency requirements; work with agencies to resolve any issues or enforcement actions that arise;
- Occasional work on industry working committees;
- Project size can range from $5M to $80M per project
Capability Requirements
Specific Functional/Technical Skills
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering with 5 or more years of drilling experience;
- The successful candidate has been exposed to increasing responsibility in drilling engineering and/or operations with a recognized service or operating company known for its training and responsible operating practices;
- Must be knowledgeable in Environment, Health and Safety including Emergency and Oil Spill Response;
- Well-versed in Western Canadian Regulatory requirements, guidelines, and licensing requirements;
- Knowledgeable in Quality Assurance / Quality Control for drilling and completion operations, and drilling Well Design and operations;
- Must be fully competent in all standard drilling techniques;
- Directional and horizontal drilling experience is an asset.

Additional Information
This position involves short-term travel to individual drilling operations as required in the Fort McMurray area.
