We are currently recruiting for the following position.
 
Description
This position, which includes work time in both Calgary and Fort McMurray, Alberta, will be responsible for providing detailed geological interpretation and technical assessment of the oil sands for the Fort Hills Project.
 
Accountabilities
  • Develop and optimize the delineation drilling and corehole analysis programs.
  • Mentor junior staff in geological interpretation and the creation of cross sections and geological maps.
  • Advance geological interpretation of the lease through application of new data gathering methods and analytical techniques.
  • Work closely with geological modelers in creation of the annual geological mine model.
  • The candidate will also be required to work with the mine planning and bitumen production teams to coordinate oil sand requirements for bitumen production, pit wall and bench planning. Utilizing hands-on expertise in oil sand mining, the successful candidate will assist their team in the evaluation and determination of:
  • The relationship and correlation between log and core.
  • Mineralogy, clastic facies, geotechnical properties and their impact on mapping the extent of a depositional unit and resultant production implications.
  • The potential impact of basal water related to production schedule.
  • Quantification of the geological impact on mine operations such as geotechnical stability, bitumen production, and efficient mining practices.
Capability Requirements
 
Specific Functional/Technical Skills:
  • A Professional Geologist with 5 years oil sand experience.
  • Exposure to an oil sand mining project would be considered an asset.
  • Experience describing oil sand core, interpreting wireline logging data and a familiarity with the suite of oil sand core assay data.
  • Understanding of geotechnical aspects, geological modeling, mine planning and bitumen production.
  • Technically proficient with the integration of core and log data.
  • Working expertise with geological and mining software packages (preferably Vulcan)
  • Must be comfortable with integrating geology with the engineering issues associated with a mine project development.
General Skills/Knowledge:
  • Must possess well developed communication (oral and written), negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Must have organizational and prioritization abilities required to work between an operational role to a detailed geological study role.
  • Open mindedness, enthusiasm, and participative work style in the achievement of the teams’ goals and objectives within a fast paced work environment.
