The Geophysicist position is a full time permanent position located in our growing Fort McMurray, AB office. This position reports directly to the Geophysics Team Lead.
The Fort McMurray office is looking for a motivated self-starter to help build a premier geophysics group in the booming Canadian Oilsands - A key driver of Canada's economic prosperity. As a member of a leading environmental consultancy, you will contribute to the economically and environmentally sustainable development of this resource.
The Fort McMurray office is an integrated multidisciplinary team. As a contributing member, you must be able to understand the roles and facilitate the contributions of our other engineers, environmental technologists, geophysicists, scientists, project managers, and administrative personnel. Our company offers both formal and informal mentorship for junior and intermediate staff. You will have a great deal of latitude as to how to build your expertise, but there will be an outstanding body of experience to draw upon when you need professional guidance or support. The mandate of our geophysics group includes the following:
- Planning and executing bitumen and aggregate exploration programs for major Oilsands E&P clients;
- Application of geophysical data to mine development programs, investigation for new water supplies, and environmental stewardship;
- Using a variety of geophysical methods to delineate impacts and assess contaminated sites;
- Supporting a variety of geological engineering projects including tailing dams, pipelines, and siting/construction of major O&G facilities; and
- Liaison with First Nations, private land developers, government regulators, and other shareholders.
Overall Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities:
As the successful candidate, your duties will (initially) include the following field and office duties:
- Conducting geophysical surveys using a variety of methods including EM, seismic, resistivity tomography, and GPR;
- Planning and delivering logistical support for both local and remote field programs;
- Inspection, maintenance, and trouble-shooting of a variety of geophysical equipment;
- Coordination/supervision of field crews;
- Incorporating and correlating geophysical data with data from other sources or methods of investigation;
- Producing maps, reports, and other project deliverables; and
- Geophysical data processing, inversion, and quality control.
- You will be responsible to work within the provisions and guidelines of WorleyParsons Quality Assurance system, which includes adherence to the principles and standards of ISO9001, and will be expected to adhere to WorleyParsons safe working practices.
- Expect your scope of activities to expand rapidly upon demonstration of your capability and drive.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors or Masters in Geophysics is preferred, or a degree with strong fundamentals in geological, engineering, or environmental science.
- The ideal candidate will have accumulated at least 2 years of geoscience-related experience, ideally including field-based investigations.
- Geophysics is both intellectually and physically challenging - a good physical constitution is important; resistance to cold, heat, and fatigue are definite assets.
