Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Intern



The Ontario Centre for Climate Impacts and Adaptation Resources (OCCIAR) at MIRARCO

(Mining Innovation, Research & Applied Rehabilitation), along with the Upper Great Lakes Study

Group (UGLSG) and the International Joint Commission, requires two full time interns.

Job Description:

These positions will support the efforts of the tourism and recreational boating sub-committee of
the IUGLS, assess the economic, social and biophysical impacts of changing water levels on the
Great Lakes, provide synthesis of data to form the work plan for field studies, disseminate
research and support the goals and objectives of the OCCIAR and Adaptation Resources.

Responsibilities include:

  • maintain current knowledge of all Great Lakes recent climate change research;
  • research relevant climate change articles and reports on Great Lakes water;
  • Compile and catalogue climate/water data in a clear and concise format;
  • Prepare and deliver presentations related to research and gathered field data;
  • Assist in the production of a research plan to carry out field work;
  • Measure and record water levels at pre-selected ports and marinas;
  • Interview public and private marina operators;
  • Deliver accurate and timely research memos and reports to OCCIAR supervisor;
  • Assist with climate change impacts and adaptation resource development and delivery

Education

  • Undergraduate degree: Environment/Commerce or Science Communications equivalent.

Qualifications:

  • Must be under the age of 30 to qualify for Intern Program.
  • Must have graduated from a Northern Ontario High School
  • This must be your first job working in the field of study that you graduated from.
  • Strong interest in the environment and particularly climate change issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and computer skills.
  • Knowledge of commerce, finance and economics.
  • Sound situational judgment and ability to be tactful, diplomatic and discreet.
  • Proven time-management, organization/prioritization skills to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to travel and conduct field work; must have a valid Ontario Drivers License.
  • Ability to synthesize information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proficient in use of small watercraft; possess a Canadian Pleasure Craft Operators card.

Benefits & salary total $40,000 /year; one year contract may lead to a permanent position.
